Opening up a Mauser rails for the Steyr 376?
« on: June 05, 2005, 01:39:02 PM »
I'm building a Steyr 376 on a Vz24 Mauser action.  The cartridge has a .495" rim and .504" diameter at the base, about the same as the 284 Winchester.

The increase over a 30.06-type cartridge is only 20 thousandths or so.

Any experiences with this type of mod or suggestions on whether and how much to open up the rails on the action?

Thanks in advance!

I can't answer your question but I am real interested in this myself. I have two unissued M48 YUGO actions, The .376 Steyr is the largest round you can easily chamber in thease intermediate actions. I'm just waiting on some extra dollars to start. 8)

Funny how you mentioned the .284 Win because thats what the second action is for, Just a little more than the 7X57 but how many do you see a the range? I got an itch to be just a little diffrent.

The  .376 will be in scout type trim, The .284 will get a long bull barrel and varminter stock.

Keep us posyed on what you find out, Thanks.

I've no experience with the 376 so am of no real help.  Sorry!  The 284 usually requires a bit of work to get to feed well but not impossible..  It never seemed to feed as well as the 7x57 or the 280..

I have built three 376 Steyrs on Mausers and was happily surprised with the ease of the alterations. The 15 deg shoulder angle helps a lot and sure is easier to make feed correctly than the 284 with it`s 35 deg shoulder. Go easy on the rails as there is a bit of difference between individual Mausers it seems. Also, use a PM follower for the mag or modify the one you have.
