45 ACP and RL 550b reloading ?
« on: July 08, 2005, 06:25:50 AM »
I'm having a problem (I think) removing the powder funnel from the 45 cases when lowering the shellplate.  It seems like it takes too much effort to extract the cases.  If I do this too much I'm going to damage something.  Does anybody lube the inside of the cases to alleviate this?  Am I doing something wrong?  I'm kind of new to the RL 550.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

No, I do not lube mine and haven't really ever thought about doing it.  What brand dies are you using?  I use dillon and while it can be difficult to extract (nothing lately that I remember), it has never broke or bothered me.

I'd suggest using mica or graphite if you want to lube it.  Grease or case lube may give you a mess with powder sticking to the funnel.  Just remember that brass is used as wear bushings in some applications, so you won't wear out the funnel.

Are you cleaning (tumbling) the cases before loading them?

PS- cheap graphite from a lead pencil - just scribble it on to see if it helps.

Are you talking about the part that expands the case mouth? The only thing I can think of is that you are expanding the case mouth more than necessary and the expander is gripping the inside of the case.

You shouldn't have to lubricate 45ACP cases.

Try using fine steel wool to clean the powder funnel die.

I had the same problem with my 357mag funnel.  I cleaned/polished it with some Flitz on a rag and the problem went away.
