Got to shoot my Ruger SRH Alaskan 454...
« on: July 07, 2005, 04:29:24 PM »
I picked up my new toy from the gun shop last weekend. Didnt get a chance to shoot it until yesterday. I used Winchester 300gr jacketed flat points for test ammo. I loaded up six rounds in the cylinder. I cocked the hammer for the first shot just to get a feel for it first   It was WAY less than I had anticipated. I think I had a grin from ear to ear after the first shot. I proceeded to pop off the other 5 behemoths. I wish I had bought more ammo for it, because it sure was fun to shoot. I did notice that after about 20rds I started to flinch a little bit. My brother's friend (15yo) was with me and he gave it a shot. I'd like to note that this was his first time shooting a firearm. Ever. I brought my wife's Walther P22, my Sig220, and the Alaskan. He liked shooting the .22 and the 45acp, but he really liked shooting the 454. We shot a couple short videos of us shooting the Alaskan, but I dont know how to post them or if I even can.
Oh, the Hogue grips seemed to tame the 454 alot more than the standard SRH grips.

Sounds like a great gun, I had one that was custom made 2 years ago. It was a Super Redhawk in 454 Casull cut down to 2 1/2 inches. Great gun to shoot and recoil is very manageable.  :D

AK|bandit.

Sounds like the kid in the candy store story. I have been thinking about one myself and this report might just jump in and give one a try. I think they are the coolest looking handgun on the market. You may see my post here before long talking about the 454 Alaskan.....Joe.....

Man you're killing me! I've been on a wait list for one since they were first announced. It appears that they are not available in the lower 48 yet.
No one had been able to give me any indication of when they will be here but your report gives me hope. Sounds like it will be exactly what I was expecting. Congratulations, but let me repeat, You are killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw one two weeks ago at Ulmer's Hardware in Homer, Alaska. I have yet to see any down here in Oregon.

Congrats and have fun

I agree Redhawk1, the recoil is very managable...
oso45-70, I really like the looks of them also. It's bigger than it looks in pictures. Very solid revolver.
v-man, it'll be worth the wait! I went out again and put another 20rds through it. I really like it alot. I've heard that the lower 48 has been getting them in. If I recall, even a member of the board from Nevada picked one up at a local shop. I've heard from a few gun store owners here, that Alaska only saw 70 SRH Alaskans. I know the ones shipped to Anchorage were snatched up pretty quick.
