States To Avoid

by Al Doyle

While the suffocating nanny state continues to grow at the local and national levels, some places are even more socialistic than what passes for normal in 21st century America.

When it comes to these havens for people controllers and Karl Marx wannabes, the idea of "working within the system" to change things for the better is delusional. The ONLY solution for freedom lovers is to get out and stay out of all seven of these hideous People's Republics.

How did I come up with the worst places in America? What methodology was used? Never mind government economic numbers, Chamber of Commerce puffery and other completely unreliable data. Per capita spending on government schools and the number of Taco Bells in certain areas wasn't considered. Climate didn't enter into the rankings, as that can be a subjective choice heavily skewed by personal preferences.

Just one factor was used to pick the socialistic seven. Before you accuse me of laziness, rest assured that this single indicator provides utterly reliable and time-tested proof of a state government's attitude towards freedom and taxation.

What's the common denominator? Just check the state and local gun laws. Without exception, places where emotional, "don't confuse me with the facts" shrieks of gun grabbers are the background music of daily life also overflow with nosy bureaucrats and ever-growing taxation and regulation.

Anti-Second Amendment laws and undisguised hatred of individual liberty in other areas of life are a natural and predictable combination. If the local commissars despise your AK-47 and Glock pistol, don't expect them to keep their greedy paws off your earnings or the right to do what you see fit on your acreage.

In alphabetical order, here are America's worst places to live.

California: No list of anti-Second Amendment places would be complete without this cancer on the body of liberty. Under state law, every gun sale (even between two private parties) is supposed to be performed through and recorded by a licensed dealer, and a 10-day waiting period for gun purchases is required. That rule backfired on hypocritical gun grabbers who came to their senses during the L.A. riots of 1992.

Anyone who has the misfortune of moving to California must register their handguns with the Department of Justice. State-designated "assault weapons" such as the AR-15 and its spinoffs, all AK-47s, the FN (Fabrique Nationale) .308s and a number of other semi-automatic rifles must be registered with the state. Even those who own inexpensive SKS rifles with a detachable magazine are expected to tell the bureau(c)rats about their weapon.

Even though he made a fortune in shoot 'em up movies, Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is solidly in the gun grabbber camp. That passes for consistency in the Hollywood mindset.

District of Columbia/Washington, D.C.: Predictably, the epicenter of the worship of statism has the worst gun laws in America. All handgun ownership is banned, and those who own rifles or shotguns must register with the city.

Don't plan on using your Ruger 10/22 or Remington 870 for home defense in D.C. if a burglar or crackhead is in the bedroom. All guns must be stored and disassembled or fitted with a trigger lock. Those who must work in D.C. can always live in Virginia.

Hawaii: This tropical haven for collectivists can make Montana winters look good by comparison. Those who move to Hawaii are required to register every gun they own with the state within 72 hours of arrival. Permits must be obtained for handgun (seldom issued) and long gun purchases. I'll stick with the mainland.

Illinois: The state's perpetually corrupt and bloated government is obsessed with tracking and restricting law-abiding gun owners.

It would be difficult to find a more outspoken opponent of the Second Amendment than Chicago mayor Richard Daley. Handguns are already banned in Chicago (tell that to the many gangbangers who use them), and all other guns are supposed to be registered at City Hall, but that isn't enough to satisfy Daley's lust for power.

On more than one occasion, Daley has stated his desire to see all guns banned. His taxpayer-financed hallucinations include an unsuccessful attempt to create a 100-mile "gun free" zone around Chicago. Where does Daley think he has the right to impose his Stalinist vision on other towns, not to mention residents of Wisconsin and Indiana?

Never one to refrain from butting in where he has no business or jurisdiction, the mayor also failed in a lawsuit against suburban gun shops. Daley has Mussolini's bluster with 60 fewer IQ points than Il Duce, and he can count on a loyal toady in governor Rod Blagojevich.

Things aren't much better outside of Chicago. All Illinois gun owners are required to obtain a Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) from the state, and the card must be presented to purchase even a single round of ammo. All gun purchases are supposed to be registered with the state.

Gun phobia is firmly rooted in a number of effete suburbs. Local ordinances ban all gun ownership in Skokie, while handguns are banned in Evanston, Highland Park, Morton Grove, Oak Park, Wilmette and Winnetka. Got a job in Chicago? Commute from northwest Indiana.

Massachusetts: The locals keep re-electing Ted Kennedy. Need I say more?

Residents must register with the state and obtain permission from Massa(chusetts) to purchase even a simple single-shot long gun. So-called "assault weapons" are banned, and going through the bureaucratic paperwork and fingerprinting to obtain a firearm identification card doesn't automatically lead to handgun shopping.

The basic FID is limited to "only a non-large capacity rifle or shotgun and feeding devices and ammunition therefor." Cards are issued by police chiefs. Class A licenses are required for handgun ownership, and random restrictions may be placed on the government permission slip.

"A complex procedure is set out for the purchase of rifles, shotguns, handguns, their related feeding devices, large capacity firearms and large capacity feeding devices," according to the National Rifle Association. "Care must be taken to have the correct card or license for a particular purchase. It is unlawful to sell, or transfer any firearm, firearm feeding device or ammunition to person without the proper card, license or permit."

The solution for freedom lovers is obvious: Move to New Hampshire.

New Jersey: Here's another place that mandates gun owner registration. Only holders of a Firearms Purchasers Identification Card (FID) may legally own a weapon. A permit to purchase "in quadruplicate" must be acquired for each handgun purchase. Handguns must be trigger-locked or disabled in some other way to prevent quick access.

New Jerseyans sometimes complain about the state's reputation as a less than desirable place to live, but few places offer such an unappealing combination of high cost of living, excessive taxes, traffic jams and hatred of individual liberty. Pennsylvania is a nearby alternative for gun owners.

New York: Meet the granddaddy of gun/people control. The infamous Sullivan Act of 1911 was the first major anti-gun legislation in America. Sullivan was passed to keep all but well-connected New York City residents from legally owning handguns.

Big Apple residents were required to register their rifles and shotguns with the city in 1967. Not surprisingly, politicians promised to never raise the $3 per gun fee. It's now $55 per gun to put your name on the city's database/hit list.

All residents of the state must get a permit if they want to own a handgun. The process can take up to six months. Orwell's Big Brother would feel right at home in Albany or Manhattan.

Dishonorable mention: Residents of Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota are required to get permits for handguns, but rifle and shotgun laws follow the national guidelines. Wisconsin's gun laws are average by current standards, but (as a 10-year cheesehead) I have to put the state on the list because of its confiscatory tax structure and gluttonous state and local government.

They may talk of a "New Order" in the  world, but what they have in mind is only a revival of the oldest and worst tyranny.   No liberty, no religion, no hope.   It is an unholy alliance of power and pelf to dominate and to enslave the human race.

Let me add Kansas to the list. The Democratic governor,Kathleen Sebilius, recently vetoed the concealed carry bill, after the Kansas legislature passed it.

Her stated rationale was that "we don't need to subject our children to the danger of a loaded gun in every car,'AND"it will make the job of law enforcement more dangerous."

This directly affects me as I live 20 miles south of the Kansas border and sometimes my wife wants to go do stuff in Kansas.

The upside of this is that Kansas will have a new governor as soon as they can vote this elitist, commie shrew out.Like Texas did to Ann Richards, and Missouri did to that idiot Owens.

CT just missed moving one step closer to a permit for all guns law.
SB1133 would have put the names of all persons denied a permit or certificate of competency on the NCICS list of those to be denied purchasing firearms. It passed but only after rewording that basically eliminated that part. Now the same blood alcohol level used for DWI applies to those carrying a handgun with a permit & the mentally ill cant buy guns.

I fully expect next year they'll be trying to slip it back in there. The NRA calls us a "shall issue" state but we're not, we're a "May issue" state & the issuing authority has broad discression as to who actually gets one.
If you'v never been in ANY trouble a permit is almost a given, but if your human who's ever had any brush with the law you may be suprised at what might make you a person not "Suitable" for a permit.

Whats "Suitable" anyway?  Its specifically worded that the issueing authority decide that you are a person "suitable" for a pistol permit.

On the east coast the states to definately avoid are New Jersey and Maryland.  Massivetwoschmidts isn't too bad if you are already licensed to carry in another state.  All the rest of the states are pretty liberal about it if you have a permit to carry in another state.

New York permits (upstate, nortth of the Weschester County line) usually take only 3 months or less.

Stay the hay out of New York City - they don't honor anybody's permits, including their own, and the NYC cops don't like strangers from outta town or us upstate cowboys either packin' heat in scum city or defending themselves there.

Having to apply for a permit, going through a backgfround check and then being issued a permit to carry is not something I see as restrictive or intrusive - it is the one process we can go through that sets us above the rest of the population - we have proven that we have done nothing wrong and therefore qualify to carry a concealed weapon.  Geez, in NYS we go through a more intensive background check than police applciants do - fancy that.  Mikey.

You'r not supposed to have to prove you'v done nothing wrong to qualify for a right in our country. Even besides that theres the fact that once you have a permit they know about you & in NY they even have a list of every handgun you have. Wont be hard to take them once they go one step further since we're all registered, all the law abiding gun owners anyway.

I dont want to be above the rest of population either, just equal.

The fact that we have these rights (watered down as they may be) is what sets the US above most of the so called free world.

Far as I see it they overstep their bounds once they go beyond withholding guns from violent felons. Only violent ones, I dont think a wall street investor that imbezzles a few million should lose his right to keep & bear as he's non violent.

It should be their burden to prove that an individual intends to cause harm WITH A GUN thats needed to refuse a gun & thats it. You pass, you get your gun & can carry it or not at your discression, in your car, your pocket, your responsibility, your second ammendment right!

Leverdude:  actually, some of the licensing judges in NYS are saying that the burden of proof is on the licensing agency to prove you are not elegible - that means a background check, of course.  But again, that doesn't bother me.  True, they know who has what registered but I would rather carry legally than face jail time and loss of lots of things for being illegal about it.  Here, whenever there is a shooting with an illegal piece, and the shooter gets caught, the least most punitive law broken is the one concerning illegal firearms, but that one is good for at least a year in jail.  No thanks, I prefer my legality.

Equality - ummmm, I'm not so sure I will go with that one.  I see the average population as having the good, the bad and the ugly.  We're the good guys, we know about the bad guys, and the ugly ones are the ones who neither understand or are willing to listen and acknowledge.

Anywho, as I see it if the gov't ever goes into paranoia/stupidity-drive and begins efforts to confiscate legally owned firearms without justification (we don't want you people to have guns any more so we're taking them), well that's when the revolution starts.  Mikey.

Important thing to remember is that all guns were once legally owned firearms. They realized a long time ago that the only way to bag criminals with gun laws is to create new criminals.

It would be nice to believe that the Gov views permit holders as exemplary citizens, as it should. But by & large I think they view us as the enemy.

I also agree that my freedom is important enuff that I walk the line to keep it, but the fact that I must satisfy someone else's regulations to exercise a basic right guarenteed by both my state & federal constitutions just dont sit right with me.

I think that it's important to understand that anything that you need government's permission to do is not a right.

It is my contention that no government at any level has either the legal or the moral authority to regulate arms of any kind.

What this assumption of authority on the part of government is actually meant to accomplish is to acheive a monopoly on armed force.

People ask permission to exercise their lawful rights and sacrifice their other freedoms and allow the government to violate their other rights because someone has either convinced them that it is reasonable, or tells them that if they don't, there will be "trouble".

Government keeps the big guns, and denies them to The People, so that The People are cowed and rendered subservient because they are afraid of the government.

Rights have been successfully converted to optional and deniable privileges.

Doesnt need to be on the list, its in the United States & therefore headed the same way. The state may resist it more than others but sooner or later it'll catch up with them. Do they require a permit for conceled carry?
Do they comply with NICCS? If so then they are at the whim of the feds already. Its a national problem & trying to keep it local because your state isn't so bad yet does no justice to the second ammendment.

My neighboring state of Vermont does it right - it's one of the only non-licensing states in the Union. Alaska may be the other - I'm not sure.
The four states that prohibit concealed carry altogether, according to NRA, are all in the Midwest, although Hawaii is a de facto no-issue state.

FW....you said it all with "I think that it's important to understand that anything that you need government's permission to do is not a right. "  Just the other day I was pondering applying for my CC permit in this crappy state.  I read the application process and was blown away.  After being fingerprinted, background checked, mental health checked, convincing your local cheif law enforcement officer you have a "justifiable need" to carry, demonstrating your knowledge of handgun safety (you must take a course)  and paying an almost $100 fee, the application still has  to go to a NJ Superior court judge for his/her approval or denial.  If that process wasn't designed to discourage handgun ownership I don't know what else.  As a sidebar....I was standing outside where I work just a few minutes ago and there was a false fire alarm at the building next door.  Up comes three local police cars (lights and sirens going and all) and out of the drivers side of two of the cars, jumped women (and I use the term loosely, they looked like teenagers) cops.  They both were built like models for a crispy creme calander.  These "cops"  had "training" patches on their uniforms which I can only assume means they are in the process of becoming "real cops".  But, you guessed it, they were both packin' semi-autos.  It's a shame how some of the lameass local yahoos around here can be trusted to carry in public when an upstanding, hard working, tax paying guy such as myself (who's been shooting and handling handguns for over thirty years) can't be trusted to carry.  I guess the powers that be are afraid I might shoot something.  By the way, I decided to skip the CC application process. Its such a prohibitive, subjective process, this state should just be added to the list of states that prohibit CC.
