Anyone heard of 38 special "+P+" ammo?
« on: July 29, 2005, 04:53:45 PM »
I ordered some "+P" 38 ammo online and when I got it, it turned out to be labelled "+P+". This is Winchester "110 Gr. Jacketed Controlled-Expansion" ammo and the label says "for law enforcement only/not for retail sale" and says that the ammo has average pressure of 15-20% higher than +P standard and "will permanently damage aluminum or lightweight frame revolvers." I ordered two boxes, one was supposed to be plain 38 special, not even +P, but that one too had the same higher-than +P pressure warnings.
I have an all-steel S&W 36LS, but when I called S&W they said that this ammo cannot be used in the 36LS.  :( I am wondering what types of guns this ammo can be used in. Anyone know? Unfortunately I have to give away the ammo (100 rounds) because the 36LS is the only 38 special I have, and I don't have a 357 magnum either.

Sounds like some one went to sleep at the switch where you ordered your ammo. Your Lady Smith would probably handle the +p+ but not for very long, Can't you send them back to the place you bought it from ? If i were you i would find some one and sell the ammo to. The +p+ is getting pretty close to the 357 mag. Much too hot for the J-Frame. I hate to see you take a total loss on the stuff. Good luck on getting rid it............Joe.......

Worst case: take it to your local gunshop and trade it for standard pressure ammo. The trade would be good for both parties. Course you could buy a .357!

If I sit on this +P+ until I get a 357 that might be a while...unfortunately I can't return the ammo (mail orders for ammo are I think generally un-returnable) but I might be able to trade it.  I will call the company I ordered it from and see if they'll do a refund of some type.  It wasn't a lot of money though...only about $7 a box of 50.

That's a good price. Mind sharing your source?

Find a friend with a .357 and do a trade or take them to the range and have some fun.

Your ammo was intended for .357 magnums and guns like my S&W 681 chambered in .38 Special that I picked up a couple years ago.  These were made for certain police departments.

Deb15 - the steel frame S&Ws should be able to handle +P loads without a problem.  One of the gun mags ran an article about testing two non-+P rated S&W snubbies with +P loads and after 2500 rounds each the guns shot better than before.  Following that, S&W began rating some of their snubbies for +P loads.

However, if S&W says don't fire them in your Ladysmith, then trade them off for some standard pressure loads.

Lots of folks go for the use of the +P loads in snubnosed revolvers because they think it gives them some sort of an advantage.  If you can neither hit or place your shots where they should go with standard pressure loads you chances of doing what is necessary with higher pressure loads drops exponentially.

There has been lots of talk about this load or that, whether 38s will penetrate car bodies, drop the bad guys on the first shot, etc., and etc to ad nauseum.  The 38 Special is a soft target round.  158 gn Standard pressure loads will do just fine as defense rounds from a snubbie.

Trade the hot stuff off for some standard pressure 158 gn swc loads and practice with your revolver.  I feel you would be in a much better position to adequately defend yourself if practiced and confident with standard pressure loads than if neither with +Ps.  HTH.  Mikey.

For what its worth, I have a S&W 640 (dash nothing) chambered in .38, not .357, and it is stamped "rated for +p+ ammo."  I have never shot any +p+ ammo in it, but I do load hot 148 grain hard cast lswchp in it with no problem.
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!
