I read a bunch of stuff at frogs page http://home.sprynet.com/~frfrog/cleaners.htm where he tested numerous solvents for copper removal, and it seems plain 10% ammonia works better than all the rest. I am a butch's bore shine fan, but if something else is better I want to know. Anyone use this or any other homegrown concoctions for cleaning? He also debunked the ammonia eats steel story, however, I am not leaving anything water based in a steel bbl for too long, and it WILL be flushed, patched, oiled, and wiped down thoroughly before being put away.

I've been using WipeOut for about a year now and have recently tried Outers Foaming bore cleaner, for a commonly available product(Outers in particular at Walmart for $6.88) they work extremely well, much better than BBS or Hoppe's BR. There's a couple new products on the market that are getting good reviews that won't affect barrel metals, Montana Extreme and Extreme Copper melt, but they are real hard to come by and very expensive from my investigating them.

I tried Butch's Bore Shine, Sweets, and the Outers foam for copper removal. The Outers is good stuff but still takes a long time to get copper out.

I'm going back to good ol' Hoppes No.9. Yep, basic Hoppes for copper removal. I clean the powder residue out, swab with Hoppes and let it sit overnight. Then I dry patch the next day. If the first dry patch still shows blue, I swab it down again and let it sit for another day. Takes two or three days but letting Hoppe's sit and do its magic seems to take less effort and do a much better job than anything else I've tried. Plus, I don't have to worry in the slightest about a brass brush, or ammonia damaging the bore. I also limit the number of strokes the rod goes up and down the bore.

I'm glad I experimented, but from now on I'm sticking with the tried and true. Hoppe's No.9 for me!

One thing that I found out about the foaming bore cleaners is they settle to the bottom of the bore after a while and don't have as much affect on the top half of the bore, the result is it appears that the bore isn't clean so you apply it again. If you invert the rifle(scope side down) for about half the soak cycle, it will clean it well it one, maybe 2 cycles at most, depending on how fouled the bore is. I've been a dyed in the wool Hoppe's lover for about 50yrs, and for the last 20yrs or so using Hoppe's BR, it's good stuff, but Wipeout and Outers are better and will clean a badly fouled bore much faster and without any brushing.....if you use it right. :wink:
