There was talk about a month ago about possibly allowing rifles in some southern tier areas. Whats new with this,anyone have the latest word?

Make a decision to legallize rifle? They can't even make a decision what day opening day is going to be.

I'd like to see rifle legalized, I'm itching to buy a couple barrels for my Encore. A 223 is definitely just a phone call away. Should they decide to open it up for rifles I can see a 7mm-08 or 308 on the way as soon as its legal.

slopoke - there are already one or two Encon areas in the southern zone where rifles can be used.

Str8shooter48 - you can use Encore/Contenders (handheld, not rifle stocked) in handgun/shotgun areas now. It is legal now. My brother hunts with a .308 Encore.

Go get that new barrel and get it set up for next season. HTH. Mikey.

Mikey I'm talking about a 308 rifle barrel. I've been hunting with a 35 Rem Contender for over 10 years now. If I hunt with a handgun I wouldn't change a thing. We have a good track record.The past couple years my Encore 209x50 has been the first choice.

Will there be caliber size limits for these new areas? If there will be size limits, I think a 30-30 or a 35 Rem. would be good enough for these areas. It is not like there will be many 200 + yard shots in the southern tier.

My nephew just got a .270 T/C Encore handgun w/ 2x7 scope. That's legal in Otsego county; yet my M94 30/30 with peep sights can't be used. What crap! Look at the magnum in-line muzzleloaders (?). Common sense should prevail. I have no problem w/cal. restrictions either.

Qtip: the Encore in 270 is a handgun, your M94 is a rifle. Handguns are allowed in shotgun zones. My brother goes to his treestand with two guns - a 12 guage for bambi and his 308 contender for longer ranges at coyotes. It is all legal. Mikey.

Yep !...Here in Cattaraugus county, we can use a 30-06 or .270 in a 14" TC...but I can't take my H&R .44 mag rifle into the woods during deer season....

Politicians making laws on subjects they know nothing about...sigh !!

I've shot and hunted enough to know the difference between firearms and I know the regs. for my area. The point I was trying to make is what ironglow was saying also. "Common sense" in this part of the regs. is missing. The common explanation for slug only is how far the projectile can travel. Just how far do you think that 14" 270 Encore could go compared to my 30/30 or ironglow's .44? That's what I mean about common sense missing. It's almost the same type of debate between pro and anti crossbow.

Whitetailer, Johnson's (Lockport) has a very clean used one in .25-06. Good price, I bought it's mate they had in .223

Back when I hunted the Southern Tier (DeRuyter area) in the '80s there was a minimum caliber, actually a minimum cartridge requirement for handguns!

If I remember correctly, the regs read 357 Magnum or larger (38 Special was illegal)! I don't know if this is still the law or not, but you may want to check things out in detail!
Another thing to check on, it was/is illegal to "go afield with rifle ammunition in your possession"!

Chuck White - the requirement for a minimum bore caliber for pistols was dropped when the Encore/Contender pistols were approved for use. My brother has one in 308 and it is legal. Also, the rifle ammo restriction has fallen in the same direction for the same reason. HTH. Mikey.

Pistol caliber restrictions were only dropped recently (last few years); contender-like guns have been around much longer than that.

Also recently changes were made to allow centerfire rifles for night-time predator hunting.

Sunday hunting has been opened up in the western regions.

Some states (PA) have been predominantly centerfire rifle for years in areas that resemble the most open NY State western zones.

Funny thing: even in shotgun areas, there are no caliber restrictions for small game (.458 win for red squirrel?)

Thinking back, if I had my Encore back then, I might have been able to get that big buck that stood 250 yards away, pointing at his rib cage!

Even with rifles, most shots at deer in NY are under 70 or 80 yards. This is not significantly different than for muzzleloaders or for rifled-barreled shotguns shooting sabots. Also, I have to be just as careful about backstops with shotguns or muzzleloaders as I am with rifles. I suspect that if you feel unsafe with rifles, you should feel just as unsafe about shotguns or muzzleloaders.
