Also advised that at this Saturday's H.P. match at Atglen, Bill set a new range record of 34/40 for High Pwr Hunter Rifle.
An awesome performance on a difficult range.

You know one dosen't quite know how to respond to Bill... Should we fill him with congrats and etc?? Nah that would just make his head swell even more...

Should we take the line of "You kow for such a loud mouth, he sure can shoot"..? Nah..that would just entice him to start calling me back woods slang names and etc...

Well here we are, 1 week before Winnie. Last April I met Bill at FL. Had the pleasure of shooting beside him and Varn. Funny, FUNNY guys, had a blast. To my point... Bill was talking about "stepping up" to the plate and looking to compete with Cathy and Troy and etc. Like I said here we are, 1 week away, records being broken, our boy apears to be in top shape...no excuses... should be intresting this year with some many great shooters..time will tell.

Congrats, and good luck at Winnie. I'll buy you one either way!

George, Bill has an advantage over most of you fellows in that he shot silhouette pistol for years and made it to the top of the game.  Good pistol shooters always make it to the top of rifle in a fairly short time.

Gringo, That was a 35 x 40 and I really had no excuse for missing any.  We had really good conditions.  I also broke my own record for HP Hunter chickens that day. Now it is 22. I had set the new record the weekend before at the King of the Mountain Match at Williamsport, PA. @ 18 chickens.
George, Hell there is still another weekend before Winnsboro its not to late to move up and quit baggin it. and hey thats one more weekend to change some records!
Dawg the prize is the records. What can I say I got lucky. The little buggers just kept jumpin off the rails so I kept shooting at them. I had 2 15 in a rows on pigs to attempt but it was getting to late so another day , and another match. There have been a lot of people that have helped me a long the way, and I still keep learning something new all the time. It's a great sport and I love the personal challenge to beat my last score or shoot closer to center. It's all about the personal challenge. Thats what keeps it fun and challenging for me.   Bill Robinson

That's a fantastic effort Bill - it gives us all someting to aspire to. If you don't mind would you let us know what equipment you used and what training techniques you think make the difference between the ordinary and the extraordinary. Thanks Nigel.

fwt1712, I use your name. an Anschutz 1712 FWT in a Mark Pharr Hunter Stock. I shoot it both ways. Understand something ...anyone can do this well !!! It just takes a little time and some practice. This is a game of finesse, not strength. It is also about mental ability. Controling your own thoughts.  Good equipment good ammo and take good care of your equipment. Know your equipment well through practice and don't worry about things you can't control Just the things you can. I only concern myself with the present target and let the score take care of itself.

Hornet,
Since I'm always handling sign in activity and helping to run the matches at Atglen I rarely get to see what the top shooters are using.
I can't relate to smallbore since - if I added this shooting discipline I'd have to go through another divorce and these are too expensive!- but am wondering if you can advise us what you're using for HP for both rifles, and if you've done someting different in your physical and/or mental approach to the game to enable this performance burst.

Many of us tend to get stuck in the "same old way" syndrome and you're now shooting at a level most readers (including this one) haven't reached.

Hi Gringo,  It isn't really a burst. It is more like a gradual increase in scores.  Last year I gave up High Power and concentrated on 22 and air rifle so I could learn how to shoot Rifles better. A 22 will teach you everything that the High power recoil doesn't allow you to see. If you don't want to start 22, then buy a good PCP air rifle and start practicing in your back yard. Buy the match rifle. they are slower and will teach you way more about trigger control and follow through. Physically i am just a specimen  :) .  C'mon I am over weight 38 yr old male. This isn't a physically demanding sport..all you have to do is learn how to stand still. Isn't as easy as it sounds.  I do have a couple of rules about food on match days. No caffine, no eating less than 2 hrs before practice starts. and I usually only drink water during the day( lots of water) and eat granola bars. But I have found lately that I can eat lunch as long as I keep it mild.
..The most important part is the Mental game. Match pressure is what holds back most shooters. there is only one way to get over it. Shoot a lot of matches. Mentally prepare yourself to shoot well. Every time I step to the line I fully expect to hit every single target. If you don't expect to hit it then you are guessing and hoping for luck. I know my guns and I have checked the settings they rarely change much unless a range is set up different.  Don't be afraid to try something new, even in the middle of a match. When things aren't going right you have to change something now! I have learned from 12 year old kids and been whipped by them.Ihave also learned from some of the best in the country. I will watch other shooters that I consider to good and pick apart what they do and see if I can use it.  Read Lanny Basshams book "With Winning in Mind" It was the best book I have read on the subject. I don't do everything he wants a shooter to do like keeping a log, but he has a grasp on the issue unlike no other.
Get your wife into air rifle then you will have a full time spotter for life. My wife used to shoot with me in IHMSA and the other guys hated to see her show up because she normally beat them.  Spotters are a whole different issue and lord knows I am learning to be nicer to mine, whom ever it is at the moment. I'm trying to get my wife to start spotting for me again. Who could you trust more, hell she wants to see you win .

Well-done Bill. Excellent shooting.

I think you have to do a Lot more Learning...LOL

"Spotters are a whole different issue and lord knows I am learning to be nicer to mine, whom ever it is at the moment."

I think the best spotters are: Blind in one eye, Deaf in one ear, have gammy legs, and don't know their left from their right. If you add inarticulate, warped sense of hummer and makes up words. I'm your man... LOL. Is there a "be nicer to spotters day"? And can it be next week.
Cheers Dave.

That's my British spotter who doesn't know his left from right and still calls turkeys... chickens. How can I get mad at him when I'm laughing at some of the words he comes up withwhile spotting. He's catching on...this week should be interesting. I'm hoping maybe I can bribe Massey to spot me.

Congrats Bill!  I just stumbled across this thread after not lurking here for quite a while.  It comes as no surprise to me to read that you are doing well and competing at the top levels.  I had to chuckle at Chicken George's comments...it's obvious that he knows you well! :)  Keep at it with the same gusto and I'm sure I'll be reading about some 40x40's in your future...
