winchester white box 45gr. question?
« on: July 09, 2005, 04:56:10 AM »
this fall i'm going on a mule deer hunt and will get to shoot some prairie dogs on the side. like many, i've had spotty success with handloads in my .223 handi. 50gr. va-max under H335 shoot pretty well, if i do my part. i'm just not getting the velocity i want. i was thinking about trying the WWB varmint pack. does anyone have any experience shooting PD's with them. i'm curious as to how explosive they are. i want a bullet that will sure enough explode something.

Never shot a pdog with them but the hollow point isn't centered so the accuracy isn't great.

I haven't shot any Pdogs either, but they shoot as good if not better than most handloads and are the gold standard for .223 Hand accuracy as you will see if you do a search for the best .223 factory load. Many, many handloaders have attemped to duplicate the WWB ammo, most are not successful and just shoot it cuz it shoots so good!! You can expect sub moa accuracy with it once the barrel is broke in.

I haven't shot p-dogs with them. But they shoot the best out of my 223 hb. When i go to next years p-dog shoot that's all i plan on using.

I have used the Winchester value pack 45-gr hp in my Remington 700 ADL .223 that I just traded off.  But they were great and none of the dead, blown up prairie dogs complained either  :sniper:

Seriously  :shock:  yes I know its real hard to be sometimes.... these were down right explosive on prairie dogs, jack rabits, cotton tails and rock chucks.  Not like a V-Max that is like hitting with nitro when it explodes, but you get very good ripping results from that little hollow point.  I have hit prairie dogs in the head and removed everything above the shoulders if that is what your looking for.

Winchester White Box - Question

I tried all kinds of reload recipes for my .223 Handi but nothing worked as well as the Winchester White Box 45gr. ammo. Four groups of three averaged 0.83 inches with higher velocity than anything I reloaded. And they cost less too!!!!

law;

Man the 45gr. white box stuff is what I used mainly out on the PD shoot this past June in Oklahoma. They sure did perform great out of my Ultra in 223. Went through about 500 rounds of the stuff. Just ordered 1,000 more rounds of the Winchester 45 grainers. I don't reload for the 223, so this and Federal Preminum 55gr. HPBT's is what I use in my AR-15 Varmiter.
As someone said, "Hit em low and watch them blow!" up that is.  :eek:  :shock:
I think you will be pleased with that ammo.
