.270 Handi goes to the range---WOW!!!
« on: July 06, 2005, 08:37:07 AM »
Back in the middle of June I posted about having found a practically new Handi in .270 at a Pawn/Gun shop which I bought.
Vacation(cruise to Alaska) got in the way of taking it to the range until today.I had picked up a box of Remington 130 grain green box at Wally World. When I got to the range I did a little bore sighting and it looked pretty close. In fact close enough that I didn't do my usual thing of trying it at 25 yards first.I went right to the 100 yard target using a 3" shoot n see pasted on a large piece of white cardboard.First shot was thee inches right  and three inches low.Second one was the same almost touching.OK,I know it is consistent so I adjusted the scope. Two more shots had it up enough and two more took me left enough.I let it cool for a few minutes while I pasted the target and then shot a five shot group spaced about three or four minutes apart.
I had three shots side by side about 1/2" high of dead center in about 1-1/2" and two shots kissing just a hair below those. This is exactly where I wanted it to be.A five shot 1-1/2" wide by 1/2" high group at 100 yards is very acceptable in my book for any hunting situation.I may try to fine it up just a little at a later date.
This is the first .270 I have had and I'm very pleased with what I see concerning the cartridge on the ballistic tables.I am also happy as a pig in a new wallow with the accuracy of the cartridge and this rifle.
So Handi rifle #4 has a new home,is definitely a keeper. The problem now will be deciding which one to hunt with.Maybe I am giving myself too many choices.
Oh well, like somebody here told me,"You can't have too many Handi rifles".
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

Thanks for the report Stan!

I have a new-to-me Handi that I put together from pieces/parts I purchased from members here and I hope I get as good a result as you did ...

... green box from wally world eh .... may have to see about that if my handload efforts get to cumbersome.

Great to hear you have a shooter on your hands. My 270 was a shooter too, but i never had time to shoot and it was really too large for my area. So the 445 supermag project has been getting most of my attention.

Stan,

The decision is easy, in my opinion.    The 22" barreled .270 is the first choice in a Handi' for deer, black bear, antelope, and a few others -- if the 26" barreled .280 is 'more than/longer than' you want to work with.    Put the rest of them away.......because only the Handi' in .280 is a better long-range deer, black bear, (etc.etc.)  rifle than the Handi' in .270.

Good hunting to you,
