I do mine in the basement at 50 ft, that way i can still see the dot and have enough light to line up the cross hairs .

Tried it at the range , it was to light to see the dot from the lazer , my eyes aren't what they use to be.

this will get you on paper

Me too! Do mine down the hallway, about 50ft. Laser bore sighted the 338-06 yesterday am before heading to the range....at the range the first shot at 25yds was 1" high and centered, moved to 100yds after that and was off to the races!!!

Don't need a boresighter for a Handi Rifle.

At the range, look down the bore and line it up with the center of the target.  Look up thru the scope, move crosshairs until you are in the approximate center of the paper.

Shoot and fine-tune.

The only reason I ask...is because different manufactures of  some of the laser bore sighters do it a bit different...some at a few feet...some at a few  yards.....I've never had a use for one in a Handi or bolt gun...but in lever actions they do work rather well and make it a bit easier...

Need more input , when you say every cal. is 12 to 18 in. high ,

I assume that you are using it on diffrent rifles or diffrent brls. on a handi .

Is it the type that goes into the chamber or the type that slides into the muzzle.

For a scope mounted ~1½" above the bore, the bullet's trajectory will cross the line of sight near 25yds, so the closer you can bore sight to 25yds, the closer you'll be with the actual shot. This is just a general rule, there are too many variables for it to be exact, but it will work either with a laser bore sighter or just looking thru the bore. The problem with looking thru the bore and adjusting the scope is the rifle moves when you touch the scope, a laser bore sighter doesn't, the laser point always stays in the same position relative to the sight picture. I love my laser bore sighter and I've been a dyed in the wool look-down-the-bore kinda guy for 40+ yrs!!!

Reminds me of my hunting partner's experience once.....he had his scope base screws break and the scope fell off when shooting at a buck at the first shot.....the buck just stands there looking at him at about 50yds....he takes a couple more shots just looking down the barrel....still no dead buck....he walks over to a nearby stump, places the rifle on the stump, pulls the bolt, looks thru the bore lining up on the buck's chest, carefully loads the rifle and shoots the buck!!!! That one should go in the Guiness book!!!!

This is a bore sight that fits in the end of the barrel. I is adjustable to fit different calibers. My 7.62x39 was about 12" high, the 22 Hornet and 223 were about 16" high and the 204 was about 18" high. All were less than 4" to the right or left. Thanks for the possitive input....

I use a Lohmans Sight Vise...and I have filled the bottom of it with #6 shot as instructed...I picked mine up at Walley World for about $20 bucks...it works great for bore sighting the Handi's so you don't have to move them around much while adjusting the scopes...I got some strange looks from a few folks at the range...but I was on paper in a few shots...and setting up at 25yards to do your initial shooting makes it a whole lot easier...just insert a deprimed 1x fired case in the chamber...and use it like a peep site (with the barrel open of course  :)... ).....make sure the barrel is level and your good to go... and to check your loads for what to site in to...I use Point Blank...here's a link to the free download of it...http://www.huntingnut.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=3
