243 with cast

Friend on another board sent me a sample of the RCBS 95 grainer (current production) to try out. This bullet, sized .244 and pushed with 12 grains of 2400 shoots like a house afire. Velocity is circa 1700 fps, so it's a respectable load.

Been shooting this in a local friends 243 Handi with a 15 pound trigger (no joke) the load shoots better than I can hold the gun. Of 4, 5 shot groups, 3 have 3 shots in 1/4-3/8" WOW. None of the groups are larger than 1". The first group was vertically strung, but was also the first f through a freshly cleaned barrel. The others are nicely rounded.

Gotta massage the trigger for sure. This has me thinking of a 243 barrel for myself. A good shooter indeed.

Man :eek: 15 pound trigger. Like squezing bricks with a finger. Haven't heard of much shooting 243 with cast bullets..?....

I havn't heard much of cast shooting for .243 either. Good groups though!

Sub MOA groups with lead in a gun with a 15 pound trigger.

Did this barrel have jacketed ammo run through it before the lead to break it in first?

Also what kind of rest are you using to obtain these results? Has to be pretty solid to assist with that trigger pull.

Till I've been playing with it, all it has shot is jacketed. Did a trigger job on it, it's down around 5 pounds now, at least it breaks clean and doesn't break your finger. I have a real sophisticated rest, a brick with a 3/4" board under it and 3 folded towels on top over which I lay the rifle. Tucking my left hand under the butt stock allows me to control the rifle pretty well. The hard part is always my breath control. I quit smoking 3 years ago after 30 years of it and still today I can't take a full proper deep breath hold it well.

I prefer to shoot on the exhale. I have better control over my pulse there and can slow it down more effectively for an extra 1/4 to 1/2 second or so to help the shot.
