12 guage question

I am considering a 12 guage slug barrel, I have heard they are brutal. Has anyone used Sims recoil pad and had a better experience?

I don't have a slug barrel but my turkey barrel with 3" turkey loads is pretty violent.  I have a Limbsaver pad on it and it does help but the little gun still has a serious amount of "back up" to it!  Sighting in is no fun but never noticed it on a turkey!

I didn't think the recoil was bad, yeah its more than a 7mm mag but thats to be expected.  I tried the limbsavers but did not like the soft rubber pulling on my clothes when shoulder the gun, so I went back to the factory pads.  The 12 gauge barrel uses a special weaver mount not the sames as the rifle mounts.  My brother has the 20 gauge also.  Both shoot great.  Deer would not know the difference if recoil is a major factor go with the 20.

I don't think the recoil is bad on a 12 gauge except with the 3" shells.  I like limbsaver pads.  They have bolt on pre-fit replacements for most major brands.

T.C. Encore 12 gauge rifled slug barrel

Just set up the TC 12 gauge rifled slug barrel on encore stainless frame. Using TC,s 1.5 to 5 scope with maxima steel rings.Lock tite on all screws.Also limb savers custom fit recoil pad on butt stock.WOW you better be ready when you squeeze the trigger on this baby. First attempt 15 rounds with winchester saboted slugs at 50 yds. not impressive 5 in group. Any body got a round that will shoot through this thing. Could use some advice to save money on slugs ,but mostly save my shoulder from black and blueness. Oh by the way im only shooting 2 3/4 in shells gun is chambered for 3in. Have 4 in of eye relief and the scope is just touching my eyebrow on recoil now.    YIKES.

Use 2-3/4" sabot rounds with lighter bullets.

The first 3 or 4 rounds don't hurt........prolonged shooting, especially from a bench is pure hell.  Recoil flinch is a factor (with me anyway) and my shoulder got that yellow greenish bruise.  Recoil doesn;t bother me hunting but it does from the bench.  I stagger my target shooting over several weeks/

By the way, I was using a Virgin Valley Kevlar stock, which is VERY light weight.  Total weight of this Encore in 12 gauge with factory barrel is around 6 pounds.  A dream to carry in the field but hell on the bench.

Try using a strap on recoil shield.  PAST and some other sell them, and they work to spread the recoil out over your shoulder.  I have one of the magnum versions and it helps when benching guns with heavy recoil.

If you really want to tame the recoil on that, do as I did on my Encore in 416 Rigby. I installed a Sims pad and in the stock I drilled a whole and installed a mercury recoil suppressor. The gun shoots great and recoil is manageable in a T-shirt.  :D

Also, try the new Hornady  2 3/4" inch round for rifled barrels. If I had to use a shotgun for deer, this is the round I would try first.......
