Hello members:  I purchased my Ultra in Oct. of 2004 and a few months after registering it with H&R, I received a satisfaction survey asking about my use of the rifle and any suggestions I would make to improve it or the offerings from H&R.  I answered the survey and jotted down a few suggestions and sent it off and quickly forgot about it.  Well, a few days ago I received a letter from Jennifer Harding in the Customer Service department thanking me for my suggestions.  She also offered to change my Ultra from ejection to extraction (something I had suggested) free of charge if I returned the barrel to them and included a new catalog as well as a 2005 retail parts price list and barrel accessory program brochure.  I was genuinely surprised to hear from them at all and especially in the form of a personalized letter that addressed a few comments that I had made.

Perhaps things are moving in the right direction at H&R - lets hope so.

Now if I can only convince them to offer that Ultra in .358 Win ........... :grin:

Welcome aboard!! :D  That's good news!! I'd think twice about the conversion, what they'll do is give you a new barrel...if yours is shooting real good, I'd certainly not do it. I'm 99% certain they can't remove the underlug for conversion to extractor since it's welded on and the extractor uses a different underlug.

call me dumb and i understand what ejection and extraction means..but i think mine is ejection since it shoots it out over my shoulder when i open the gun....whats the extraction do and how does it work?

An extractor just lifts the cartridge head above the chamber so it can be plucked out with your fingers. The H&R extractor is mechanical and very positive, no stuck cases being the objective. An ejector can be converted to a spring driven extractor real easy, but the factory extractor is very desirable for troublesome cartridges like the .223 that are notorious for stuck cases. Polishing the chamber helps eliminate the problem, but any oil or solvent left in the chamber can end up causing a failure to eject.

With an extractor, you actually have to grasp the end of the spent shell and pull it from the chamber.  This is beneficial if you reload, as it saves on having to straighten cases in the reloading process.  However, in a situation where you may need a 2nd shot, the ejector makes it quicker to reload.  I have to agree with Quick, if it shoots fine now, don't mess with it.

Sometimes I backspace a lot.  My fingers have been shiftin' gears all day.  They have to get back into typing mode. :wink:   Hey, at least I'm on the same page with ya.

ok i see now..thanks guys.....seems as though you could get an extra piece and modify it..and use the extractor for bench shooting and the ejector for hunting when you need the quick follow up right?

I don't think so, the underlugs are built different, it's not just internal components that are different, the underlug of the new style is entirely different. We were told earlier this year that once they run out of the old style underlugs, all barrels will be equipped with extractors.....that doesn't leave much room for an either/or extractor/ejector.

A new barrel might not be a bad idea.......all my lastest Handi's, 22 Hornet, 45-70, 223, and 22-250 have been extremely accurate, a lot more so than my year old 243 was, and the triggers have been great too......forgot, my 308 I just got......getting so many, I can't keep track! :grin:
