SInce I can't post in the classifieds section, I'll try here.

I have a .36 cal squirrel rifle in flintlock.  I want to convert it to percussion.  I am told it has an L&R Durs Egg lock, although one guy said he thought it was a Siler.  I would be interested in any tips in the conversion, and and maybe anyone that might have a percussion lock that would be willing to trade for the flintlock.  I can provide pics if it is any help.

First...I wouldn't convert to percussion...flintlocks were used longer than any ignition system in history...ove 200 years...a good flintlock is as reliable and almost as fast as a percussion....A .32 is great fun, and a good gun to learn with when it comes to muzzleloaders....If the lock is a Siler or Durs Egg...thats about as good as it gets....If you are having ignition problems, I might can help....I have been using flinters since 1977.

If you want to convert, you don't need or have to buy a percussion lock...Use what you have, it will be more historically correct....remove the frizzen, frizzen spring, grind or cut the pan flush with the lock plate, remove the cock (hammer) and replace with a percussion hammer.....Then remove the touch hole and install a drum and nipple....If you aren't comfortable doing this yourself try to find a smith that specializes in muzzleloaders....Good Luck

OK, I did a little more research and what I have is a large Siler lock, not an L&R.  Still may trade for a large percussion Siler if someone has one.  TOW has the hammer and drum, so might order those if nobody responds.

I have a large Siler on my Bob Watts rifle that I bought in 1978...Excellent lock...Why would you want to convert??? If the gun is set up properly a flintlock is almost as fast as a percussion....With that gun I have won many matches, keeping my shots inside of 1 inch at 50 yards...Many times I'm competing against percussion guns...Are you having ignition problems???
Or hesitation problems???

More like powder problems.  Nobody around here carries black powder anymore.  Everything is 777, Pyrodex, etc.  Even the main gun shops do not carry BP anymore.    I figure I would shoot the rifle more often if I could use 777 or something like that.  I know I could probably order BP, but the hazardous material charge does not make it cost effective.

I see...Makes sense...I'm lucky to have a Goex distributor about an hour away....How far are you from Mexico, MO or Clarksville, AR?...They have distributors in both towns....a pound of fff will go along way in a .36..

I'm about an hour from Mexico, and I know Graf & Sons sells it.  The problem is getting off work long enough to get over there when they are open.  I can get 777 at Wally World anytime.

Have you investigated buying black powder on the net and having it delivered? There's a $25 hazmat charge that covers anything from 2 to 50 lbs. Graf doesn't charge for shipping and handling.  :wink:

At the bottom it states that is the delivered price and I believe that includes the hazmat fee.  Give them a call!  You might have to get a full case but then you will be set for quite a while.

For anyone else having the same problem in the same part of the country, Boggs Creek, a pretty darn good gun shop and friends of mine, in Jefferson City, Mo. carries the real stuff.  Nyghtfall, you aren't but about 20 min. from Jeff.
