New CVA Kodiak
« on: September 17, 2005, 11:43:29 AM »
Just bought a new CVA Kodiak in 45 caliber from cabela's on sale. I tried out different black powder rifles and this gun just seems to fit me right. I am left handed and it is great for lefties. The 45 caliber was on sale so I went with that model. Does anyone have any good loads for this gun. I have Triple 7 powder & Pyrodex powder & pellets and I bought some Hornaday Plains 285 heads along with Powderbelt HP's and Areo' s in 275 grain. I also have Remingtons new 209ML primers. I ordered a williams peep sight for the rear. I want to stay with what I use for rifle hunting in my Pre 64 94  30-30. I have gotten away from scopes in the last few years and much prefer the peep sight. Any real good loads for the 45. I see that it is a magnum which will take three 50 grain pellets but that is not an issue for me, I much prefer accuracy. I don't chase velocity or I wouldn't be using a 30-30 as you can see.

I'd go with pellets 100gr max...try either, and powerbelts. Shot a number with el cheepo Staghorn. Great combo for me!!!

My first  muzzleloader hunt was back in 1974. I started with a 45 cal and it is still my favorite for whitetails.

I like a load of 80 to 90 grains (volume) FFF (blackpowder, pyrodex, pinnacle, black mag) in my 45's with 22 inch or shorter barrels. Tan 45 x 40 MMP Sabot and a 180 or 200 grain Hornady .400 diameter XTP.

For 24 inch and longer barrels I shoot 100 to 110 grains and rarely 120 grains of the above powders  (I have several 45 caliber rifles and each seems to prefer a different powder) under a Precision Rifle 45 x 357 Orange sabot and their 175 or 195 grain Dead Center bullet.

Got the same gun and caliber for my son last year.  We shot 6 deer with it.  All using 225 grain Hollow Point PowerBelts.

45's build up more pressure, and shooting 100 grains of 3F APP was a real KicK!  So I moved it down to 80grains and it hit the same mark at 75 yards   Good enough for us!

Those 225 PB's dropped every deer in it's tracks except for one 6.5 year old gray muzzle Doe.  She ran about 100 yards with a huge hole through both lungs.  She dressed out at 165 lbs.  The 45 punched clean thru every deer, with the longest shot at 60 yards.

I've tried XTP's and some other sabots, and what a pain to get down the barrel   :x

The Kodiak will not seal off all the blowback gas, just a squeek will shoot strait up where the scope would be if ya had one on it.  Some little bit of that gas will travel down the trigger assembly too.

We used CCI primers and they loaded fine by hand, but came out hard.  Needed a decapper or strong fingernails to remove the spent primers.

Do yourself a favour and switch too APP or Pinnacle powder.  It's so much easier to use and clean up after, and no Crud rings or stuck breech plugs ever!   Only use the 3f/FFFg it's the best they make and it's still more coarse than 777/Pyro 2F.

Hope this helps.
