My SS '06 handi is going to the back of the safe!

I can't stand it anymore. I've completely lost my mind. The rifle is dead on at 50 yards... At 100, I can't even stay on paper. I don't understand what the problem is. Ahhhh, my head hurts!

Any ideas? I mean, this accuracy is just pitiful. I think it's going to get a couple week rest... I don't need sub moa. I just need 2 inch groups, making it a 200 yard bear gun. Is that too much to ask?

What ammo have you tried? Have you polished the bore and chamber?

What do you mean by dead on at 50yds? What size group are you getting at 50yds? And at 100yds? More information and maybe a solution can be found,

Neither do we.  In order to help we need more information:

Group size at 50 yards
Shape of bullet holes at 50 and 100 yards
Ammunition used
Sighting equipment used
Barrel history (new, used, number of shots fired through it)

When I first got my Ultra 223, seeing that I don't have a bore sighter, I tried to sight it in at 50. Got on the paper. Then tried to move to 100...didn't even show on paper. So I went ahead and bore sighted it my self at 100, looking through the barrel and making scope adjustments.
Sounds like a scope needs adjusting. Like everyone else said..give us some details...

If you are "dead on" at 50, then with the high handi scope mounts you will be high at 100.  Either sight it several inches low at 50 or put up a massive piece of paper at 100.

Once you try that, report back please :grin:

I meant "dead on" as a three shot, one ragged hole group at 50. However, all of my shots are high. I think I'll fool around with the elevation some more.

These are just cheap remmy core-locts that I'm burning for the brass. I'm going to work up a 165 Nosler Partition, hopefully above 2900 fps for my do-all load.

I won't get back to the range until monday. I'll report back then.

It is quite rare for a rifle to group tightly at 50 yards yet not group at all at 100 yards.  Without accounting for all the bullet holes in the 100 yard target it is impossible to diagnose the problem.  However, with the additional information it now appears that the problem may not be with the rifle, but with the sight adjustments.  If you are shooting high at 50 yards you may well be shooting over the target at 100 yards. For 180 grain Remington factory ammo, if the group at 50 yards was 5" high, the group center would be 10" high at 100 yards.  This could place some or all of the shots off the top of the target.  At the moment this appears to be the best explanation for not staying on the paper at 100 yards.

Nothing at all wrong with 'Cheap Remington Core'Lokts'.  They are a fine bullet for the price.  The problem is elsewhere.

I absolutely concur with the other members here. I to believe your problem is elevation and you are shooting over your 100 yrd target. When your getting one raged hole at 50 yrds, it only stands to reason you should get a group at 100 yrds. Check that elevation and I well bet you get better than 2" groups  :wink:

How high at 50? What velocity are you shooting. We can calc the point of impact at 100 with a little more information.

i'd say that one Possible problem is working with a scope that is improperly set for parallax for 100 yd' shooting -- such as a black powder scope set for 50 yd' parallax, supposedly, that is poor at 100 yds'.    but, that's a stretch. are you shooting the rifle off the same rest/bench?    i can see where a set up on a bench can be very problematic for someone who isn't paying attention to details....

2900 fps' out of a 22"-barreled Handi' might be a bit too much to expect in an '06.    not saying it can't be done; just saying that it could be tough to achieve without paying for Federal High Energy or Hornady Light Magnums....or knowing what handloads your rifle will like.

For first sighting in I use a target stand about 4ft tall.  I cover it with butchers paper then staple targets on.  Fire first shot at center then check,  if no holes on paper shoot at the bottom target.  I usually then find a hole.  Also a big box, or piece of cardboard like a refridgarator or washer comes in makes a good first sighting in target holder.
