Cross Breeding??
« on: March 15, 2003, 11:29:00 AM »
I do have a question, "Does anyone think that deer cross breed with other types of deer?" The reason I ask is out here in California the ranges of Mule and Blacktail deer overlap in many areas. Same in Nevada and also in Oregon. In fact you are finding Blacktail in areas where many years ago you never saw any. I know that in recent years we have taken a few Mule deer with strange markings. Also have taken some very large Blacktails with pale markings. I'm no biologist but I'm almost certain the two are cross breeding(even though they, the California game biologist) say it doesn't happen) and would like the opinions of you here. Have any of you that live in areas where Whitetail and Mule deer overlap seen any cases of cross breeding? Lawdog

Yes. Mule deer cross-breed with both blacktail and whitetail.

I always heard that they do cross bread. They are called high bread black tails and you can't enter them in the books. I don't know why the California game biologist say different.

BowElkDwn,

I've given up trying to figure out why some of the California game biologist say what they say.  I believe that they have too much book learning and not enough field experience.  They need to get out in the hills more.  I think as a requirement for their degree they should have to live in the back country for at least a year, studying the very animals they are going to be so called "experts" on.  Just my opinion.  Lawdog

It is the same in Michigan.  They keep telling us stuff about the wildlife that is a bunch of hoot. Half of it is politics and alot of the rest is just some kind of denial.  Finally after several years they will admit to things that everyone else has known for years. It is too bad because we used to trust them.  But not much anymore.

Yes, they do cross breed. There's an article in last month's Petersen's hunting about it. They can be entered in the records, but fall under the larger category, ex, whitetail, and muledeer breed, it would fall under mule deer for the record books.

I've heard about the cross breed in New Mexico. Called Trans Pecos deer I believe. Never seen one though. I think they are located in the southeastern part of the state.
