Down outer jacket and breathability
« on: June 29, 2005, 05:53:58 PM »
If I wear a 605 down jacket with a polyester treated  shell will it impede the wicking of my wool underwear , shirt and vest?  Sure would be nice to carry it instead of the heavy fleese jacket I have.  The fleese jacket has a wind stopper membrane, will the shell on the down coat do the same?  Am I giving up warmth for the lighter weight outer coat?  The heavy fleece jacket is one by Raven Wear.  Thanks for any help.  Buckfever

Down outer jacket and breathability

A down outer garment is obviously one of the warmest available.  It will not impede the wicking of your wool underwear per se, but should not be expected to continue the wicking process.  Ideally, moisture will begin evaporating through the down garment.  That is why the shell should be breathable.  The worst case is that the down begins to get wet as it then loses its insulation quality.  If it is cold and dry, down is the best.  If it is going to be wet, something else might be better.  In addition, most shells for down garments are pretty wind resistant because the weave has to be tight enough to keep the down from escaping.  If the down baffles are not overlapped one can sometimes feel the wind through the stitching.
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

So if I use this in Saskatchewan where it is +15, to a -15 it work the best?
But earlier in the fall it could be a problem if there is a chance it will rain?  Does the coating on the shell which helps to keep water out a good idea or bad for Saskatchewan?  Eddie Bauer has some 3XXXL for $40-$60 bucks in their outlet, they look pretty good for a over everything jacket.  I still have to wear a thin white fleece over it the regulations in Saskatchewan.  Thoughts?  Thanks  Buckfever
