I have spent the last 5-6 months trying to become accurate with open sights on my new 475 revolver and have finally made some great progress. I just went out and set up 5 4" ballons at between 45 and 60 yds. I then took 5 shots resting off of my daypack on a fallen tree and broke them all. Feeling cocky I put the next 5 at ranges from 60-80yds. Back to the field rest and once again all 5 went down! Since my only pistol experience is with a scope I was feeling a little iffy about hunting with one equipped with open sights but hell I figure since I have never shot a deer or bear at over 50yds, open sights shouldn't be a problem at all. I certainly feel confident that any deer or bear within 75 yds is in great danger of becoming my dinner!

I shot about 100 rounds a month and spent countless hours working on sight picture and trigger control and now things are starting to come together.

Now to be able to do it offhand with no rest.

Nice going Eric.

I too spent some time at the range today. Single-Six versus a 1 1/2 inch spinner at 25 yards off a rest. Four out of six was average some better some worse. I need lots more practice but I saw lots of progress today. Next is to use my knees as a rest or a tree near the range for a rest. THEN we'll see what's what.

But again congrats on your progress.

:grin: I think I had a lot more fun and became a better shooter with open sights, course that was years ago. I still like to shoot open sights on everything, but age and decreasing eye sight had made it necessary to rely on a scope for most hunting today.

Shoot them open sights, and enjoy 'em while you can.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I lost interest in hunting with the rifle years ago and spent most of my time hunting with a recurve. The buck I shot last year with my 44 was the most memorable and exciting of all my firearms hunts. Using a pistol the last couple of seasons has really made the firearms season fun again.

Sounds like things are coming along. Congrats!

Just as a fore warning, which you may already be aware, when using open sights things change a lot with light conditions. Its much more difficult to shoot open sights accurately when things are getting dark.

I took care of the low light issue by powder coating the gold bead and the white line on the rear blade with a glow in the dark paint. During low light the sight shows up great. It really helped me out with those last few minutes of shooting light.
