20 gauge deer slugs for hogs
« on: February 26, 2005, 02:03:53 AM »
Hi:

Would a 20 gauge shotgun using deer slugs be enough for wild boar hunting?

Thanks,

I have a buddy that used the 20 gauge Remington solid copper's and several with great success. :D

I would say yes..........., but with reservations!  The common rifled all lead slug used for smoothbore guns will most likely not penetrate the thick protective plate of wild boar, just too soft.  But the all copper sabot/bullet combinations should be OK in a rifled barrel.

A 20ga rifled slug from a smoothbore works fine. It may run about 25yds but that work great. Not that it hasn't happened, but it would take a heck of a plate to stop a shotgun slug.

I use brenneke rifles slugs in the 2 3/4 inch loading and these bullets penetrate! In fact I'd use these on any hog or black bear that came along. I have used the Remington and Winchester rifled slugs on deer and can't remember recovering one.

I certainly hope so...  I bought a Saiga 20ga last season just for that purpose.  I don't think Ill be trying a single shot in 20ga.  on a big one, but I'll have plenty of back up with the next 4...
The Saiga offers a very solid mount for a scope as well.

:D Several years ago I hunted with a man that used a Winchester Model 42 (.410 gauge) and shot slugs.  The gun had a vented rib added with rifle sights, at 50-75 yards he would shoot some tight groups.  In the four years we hunted together I never seen him fail to stop a pig on the first shot.

I don't see why a 20 wouldn't do the trick if the individual can hit what they are aiming at and keeps the shot within the capabilities of the gun.

IF your gun will pattern them, try the winchester supreme nosler partition gold sabots.  They are expensive, but have energy levels close to the .45-70, and will knock a hog on his butt, out to 100 yds.
