NEF Target Model
« on: August 08, 2005, 08:12:02 AM »
I'm looking at getting this rifle, but I am hearing that it is a difficult round(38-55) to shoot well without reloading. I am looking here for info. At this time I won't be reloading but would like to get into it. I currently own a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and I want something else. Yes getting a BC would be easier but it seems like a 38-55 is calling me. Is it really that bad?

Welcome aboard!! :D  If you use the search feature at the top of the page for 38-55 with in this forum in the drop down, you'll get lots of info... very detailed info.....Those posts by JPH45 are particularily informative. I own a 38-55 Target, but it's had a  trip to a gunsnith...it's now a 405 Winchester!!!

I'm not sure how to best describe the ballistics of the 38-55. In it's mildest loadings it is a twin of the 44 Magnum, but with ballistically superior bullets. Loaded to 375 Winchester pressures, it is equal to Trapdoor loadings of 300 grian bullets. What I like best about it is it throws big heavy bullets but don't beat me up like the 45-70. I think the Target Model would be a good companion to your Marlin. The 38-55 has been discussed at length around these parts, do a search you'll find lots of info on it, At present I am getting 5/8"-3/4" 5 shot groups at 50 yards as measured outside to outside of holes, so groups are running 3/8" center to center I can't hold better than that. Not bad at all. So far, of 5 different Handi's I have played with, this one is most accurate day in and day out.

Thanks! I did not figure it for a tack driver. I shake to much anyway. :D
But it sounds like it would work well for deer. That and paper punching.
