My vote goes for the 308.  Brass availablity one reason, bullet selection is close on both.  The 308 should have a slight weight edge over the 7-08.

On the other hand, there's a bit of an edge for trajectory, sectional density (deeper penetration) and downrange energy with the 7-08 (with like bullet weights, of course), as well as it having lower recoil.  The 308 will launch a few heavier bullets.  Either way, they're both really good with excellent accuracy potential.  I'd say the 7-08, though.  In fact, I did when I was deciding between the two and there are zero regrets or second thoughts :-)  Of course, you could always get both.

If you are going for deer or smaller only, the 7-08 would get the nod, based on paper only.  If larger game in on the menu, I'd go with the 308.  Also the 308 has a proven record of accuracy.

I would say go for the 7mm-08. I have one in a win. m70 and love it. No recoil at all.

Both are good choices based on what your needs may be. I love to plink...the 308 has cheaper ammo.

In a Handy...why worry about it...it's one thing to compare for bolt actions...but it really is a moot point for our single shots....I've gone thru your same delima...heck...most of us have at one time or another....but ...with what NEF is offering...and out of the 2 barrels your wanting...I would go for the 7-08...just because I've had both the Bull barrel of the 308 and the standard...and unless your wanting to go with a bull barrel 308 which was a much better shooter....in my own experiances with them and from what I've read here at least... the accuracy edge is in favour for the 7-08...in the standard barrels that is.my bull barreled 308 is a sub MOA shooter with the right ammo(match & hunting ammo ).....performance wise...the the big brothers of the 7-08 and the 308...the 280 and the 30-06 will out do either one of the smaller siblings...and I personally would go with the larger round...also... since the 30-06 Ultra-Comp is no longer available...I would opt for the 280 over the standard 30-06 barrel. You options for loading up either the 280 or the 30-06 is significant better than the smaller rounds ...especially when using the heavier bullets...and if recoil is a problem...both can be downloaded quite easily....again...this is just my feelings on it...and I'm sure you'll be happy whichever way you go. :D

I chose short action because of recoil. I wanted something a little more pleasant to shoot than a 30-06 or 280.

Hmmm.....I've never really noticed the difference between them...except for really heavy loads...and the longer barrels is going to give you less percieved recoil since it's further away from your face and will have considerably less muzzle blast..

Shooting similar weight bullets in the 7-08 or 280 and 308 or 30-06, there's not a lot of difference in the recoil, and none if the larger cartridges are loaded to the level of the lesser cartridge. If you're limited to factory ammo, the 308 and 30-06 both have reduced loads available....and factory ammo is much more commonly available than the 7-08 will be....anywhere. A handloader can have it his way, any way you choose.

maybe you should think about the 25-06. You get the benefits of a longer barrel and less recoil than the 280. Plus you can use it for varmints

Ive got a .25-06 handi 26" barrel and love it from a tree stand. I plan to do a lot of stalking this year and want something besides my 30-30 handi for possibly longer shots from a 22" barrel. Is there much difference in the recoil of 308 or 30-06 or 270?

i think the 308 would recoil the least. I had a 270 barrel and there wasn't much difference in it and my 223. Anyway you go with the handi about the only way you're gonna get brutal recoil is to load a 45-70 with Ruger level 3 loads. Anything else is tolerable and pleasantly comfortable to shoot at the range all day unless you have some kind of shoulder injury.
