Anybody hand load for the 7-08
« on: July 19, 2005, 11:50:39 AM »
A good friend of mine just got his barrel order back from H&R.
One of the barrels is a 7-08 and he is going to load for it.
He is looking to cut his trial and error time.

Do any of you have a load that works well in the handi?

also do any of you use ballistic tips and how do they proform on deer?

I load for and shoot a 7-08, but it's not a Handi.  OTOH, what works well in one rifle may not be so good in yours.  I'd suggest that you work with the appropriate powders for the rifle and bullet selection you make.  The BT's for example seem to make a good deer bullet and have good inherent accuracy.  I'm not a fan of them myself but don't let that stop you! :-)

I'd suggest that you select a good powder for the bullet weight you settle on.  140 and 150 seem to be generally good bullets in the 7-08.  Powders that have been good for me have been 4895 and Varget for the midweight bullets and RL19 or 4350 for the 160 grain bullets.  Std primers work ok with those powders, at least for me.

My approach to load development is to first pick out the bullet that will do the job.  Then the powder that makes a match to that bullet.  I'm a firm believer in the idea that a quality bullet can be made to shoot well.

I do this http://www.mikeswillowlake.com/ladder%20test.htm and find it an effective and economical way to arrive at a load.

Quickdtoo; you are a riot.

I had a 7/08 barrel for my NEF at one point and it would not shoot worth a hill of beans.
No factory load I tried was under 4" !!!!!
Most shot around 5" !
I did not bother trying to reload for this one as I was not really interested in this cartridge; I got the barrel really cheap & when I found it was not going to shoot factory ammo, I traded it off.
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !

Glock29, please edit your signature line to exclude/change the word S**K, that word is offensive and its use does not follow the GBO Terms of Use.

Thanks,

Well...in a perfect world...this might work...but in reality...your friend is just going to have to do his own load development. Each rifle will shoot different...especially our Handi's...what might be perfectly safe accurate load in mine...might be to much for his...anytime you get load data from anywhere...always start 5%-10% below the max charges and work up slowly...All relaoding manuals show their accepted starting loads...this would be where he should start...and work up from there...
