I saw one at the gun store, yesterday when I bought my 204.
 Didn't even look at not interested, If my 44 mag or 45-70
 will not do it, doesn't need doing :eek:

I had pretty much settled on buying the .500 S+W, until I looked at the cost of brass. They come a bit more than dear. My local gun dealer had two of them in synthetic stocks and they both sold in a few days.

Saw one at the gun show Saturday in Dalton, Ga. I hope the gun does well, as it could be that if it doesn't NEF will get cold feet on offering different barrels. Good thing they hedged their bet with the 7.62x39

I would think that for around $200 any .500 S+W owner that saw them for sale would want one as a companion. It's also unique enough to attract sales attention. I'm still on the fence about buying one. The 45/70 has so much more going for it from a reloading point of view, but it's always nice to have a new project to play with.

Don, Cabelas has Hornady 500S&W brass at $19 for 50, shipping is $6.75 for 50 or $7.75 for 100.

That's not too bad. The best price I had seen was at Graf's for $27.95 for 50 from Winch. To be honest I never even thought of looking at Hornady brass. I've never tried their brass before. The good news is a Cabelas is only about 40 min. from home.

Hmmm, 80 minutes at $2.50 a gallon, I think I'd rather pay shipping!!! Of course, what fun is that!!!

Midway has it for about the same price, they also have nickel brass on sale for $24 per 50, shipping is $7 for me, less for you, I think.

Saw one at Whittaker's in Kentucky this weekend;
Looked real nice, but I thought, a fellow buy 4 boxes of ammo for it and it will cost more than his rifle.  :shock:

I think most folks are going to make the choice you allude to, getting the 45-70 that is. I deleted a fairly long reply I made supporting a choice of the 45-70 over the 500, it just makes good sense. Please note that I do hope that sales go well for NEF with this barrel, I just think it will be another 450 Marlin, a flash in the pan. Sure, there are folks buying the 500 revoler, but a few cases of induced tendonitis from hangin on to that thing will stop the fever to go shoot it. It will be like the 454 Casull, how many do ya really see? A few will have them, a few of those will use it, at least some, but it ain't going to revolutionize the shooting world.

The 454 Casull would have made a lot more sense. It has a strong, established following and is currently offered by Rossi and Winchester (unless they dropped their version already) The biggest thing the 454 has going for it is bullet availablility. Everything from round nose lead to Nosler Partitions.

But all this is beside the point, we don't make the sales decisions. So I hope the 500 does sell well and that every one who gets one loves it and wants more. That will improve the chances of my getting something I might want

Surely bullet firms will follow up soon with premium hunting & jacketted bullets.
I'm quite interested in this cartridge.
In the long run, are the cases that much more expensive than 45-70 cases?

45-70 brass is $30-$40 a hundred, so it's a little less expensive but can but loaded to much stouter than the S&W can be, the S&W is pretty much maxed out as a factory load. For a close range handgun load, the 500 has merit, but as a rifle round compared to other rounds, it's nothing special, just a novelty for many here. :lol:

I finally made up my mind to get the .500. More as a project than anything else. You need something around to keep you busy. From what I've read about it in Reloader Mag., Cast Performance had been involved in the inception of the cartridge and offers several bullets weights for it. I'm thinking the 370 WFNGC design may work well. I am wondering how well it will stabilize heavier bullets. I think the standard twist rate is 1-18"?  I have a Leupold 3X scope that should serve well on this rifle. One other thing I need to check is the difference in cases. Some utilize a large pistol primer and others use a large rifle primer. I just have to check each manufacturer to see which is which.

for the next big bore for me no other reason just to have one i guess

I think if NEF had of come out with this one around the time the revovler came out their sales would be better. When i first heard the rumor that they were gonna come out with one i was extremely excited, but then i started comparing ballistics and it really wasn't that great. The 45-70 tops it easily. Considering it pretty much max out as a factory loading there isn't much more that you can do with it. Plus, i thought the barrel would present some fairly decent rechambers but that was shot down also when i found out that the 500 S&W used .500 bullets and the 50 alasken uses .510. So i don't think i will be getting one of these any time soon. For all of you that already have them be sure to keep us updated on your results.

I think they would do pretty good if they chambered the 460 S&W. There is a lot of versitilaty there. You have the ability to shoot the 460 S&W, 454 Casull, and the 45 Colt. You can use the 460 to hunt with and the 45 colt to plink with. I think this would be a great barrel to offer.

I think Mr.Frosty hit the nail on the head.
It's a .50 cal and everyone has a 45-70 but few people bother to get something like a 50/90 or 50/120 and 50 BMG is more gun than most of us need, can afford or feel up to firing on a regular basis.
As such the .50 S&W is kinda of an easy way out.
Considering it is actually a full half-incher I reckon folks will be a little more forgiving about it's lower performance compared to the 45-70.
The extra barrel length should also push up that performance.
It will be punishing it a light little Handi-rifle though..... :(  :x

Goes to show how much I keep up with the latest outpourings from the makers. The 460 sounds more interesting already.

Do a search on google for it. I would really like to see NEF make a barrel in 460 S&W. with the ability to shoot the 3 cartridges in it, i believe it would sell quickly.

I would definately get a 460 S&W.  Going to get a barrel in 460 for my Encore soon as I find one too. 8)

The 460 S&W is quite the cartridge. It'll launch a 200 grain bullet at about 2300 fps, 300gr at 1770 fps and a 395gr at 1500 fps. These figures are out of a 8 3/8" pistol barrel. You will get a 200-300 fps increase in a 22" rifle barrel. (i think.... :?  correct me if i'm wrong)

Evidently one of the biggest road blocks to the sales of the .500 S+W Handi is the lack of availability. My dealer had two of them three weeks ago and they sold quickly. I called this morning inquiring about one and he said he has been trying to find more but the distributors aren't getting them. I was pretty hyped up about getting the .500, but I'll have to wait for one. If anyone sees one available from a distributor I'd appreciate you passing it along. I can let my dealer know and have him order from them.

thanks for the input, guys. i may yet get a .500 if i can find one, but last year i wrote to h&r/nef and requested that they chamber for the 454. didn't happen, of course. the 460 is interesting, but i can't see it  doing much more than the 454. that don't mean i wouldn't buy one if i had the chance. now, if they would just chamber a revolver for the 12 guage 3 in. slug!  would still like to see some shooting impressions on the 500. be good, guys. hunman55

I checked SportsSouth, Lipseys, and Davidsons with no luck, YET. If you know of any other distributors I can check, please let me know. It's rough when you set your sights on a gun and then can't find one for sale.

I walked into a gunshop and the woman behind the counter nearly threw one of them at me. I was forced to buy it and take it home. For those of you wondering about recoil it isn't really noticable.
