Cocking the hammer "LOUD"

Have any of you noticed or is it just me. When I cock my hammer on my Model 83, it seems extremely loud compared to any Ruger or S&W I have.  :?

All 83's are like that. It's part of the bank vault effect you hear people refering too.

I am a little concerned with it spooking the game under 50 yards. I know I could cock it when I see them at a distance, but if one sneaks in on you, your busted when you cock it.  :eek:

I had the same concern so i tried cupping my hand around the cylender and it helps some. This is one place where giant hands are handy.......Joe...........

i have been concerned about that, too.   i have tryed to muffle the sound with my hand, but it doesnt seem to matter.   the ony solution i can think of is to be very aware of your surroundings and try to detect them before they surprise you.  all of us who have hunted any amount of time know that just isnt realistic.  but i guess that is part of the challenge.  and considering all the advantages my f.a. provides me, i can deal with the loud cocking.

I’ve cocked mine while deer were close buy to see if it bothered them. Every now and then you’ll see a doe perk her ears or maybe a small buck.

The way I cock my gun in the field may not be the safest way but I carefully cock the hammer while pulling back the trigger. The only time I do it this way is if one has snuck up on me. If I have plenty of time I just cock the gun slowly in the normal fashion.

I’ve also practiced cocking while deer are close and walking. They never pay attention to the click this way. I guess they think the click is just a twig under their foot.

I still plan on using my FA for hunting. I will just have to see how it plays out.  :D

I think you are right on deer But i can tell you if old mister Yote is coming in and you try to cock one he will show you his hinney right now, Been there done that. I don't know how they can hear so well at a full run, But they can. I guess thats why we will never take them all out.....Joe........

Not all 'yotes are blessed with that level of hearing.  A few have fallen to my FAs as well.

I am going on a bear hunt to Maine in October, I have considered my FA but I have been planning the 500 Mag all along. I will use the FA this deer season though.  :D

Redhawk 1----there is a way to cock the Model 83 quietly. First cock in normal manner---do this well in advance---you have now advanced the cylinder ---then, with thumb controlling hammer, pull trigger back, holding hammer and slowly lower to half cock then release trigger---this is silent----now when ready to fire, hold hammer with thumb, pull trigger back and while keeping trigger back , move hammer to rear most position, hold hammer there and release trigger----you are now cocked again and since cylinder stays put, this, too is silent. Sounds difficult, but is not. Practice this manuver a few times and you will find it easy. One should always keep muzzle pointed in a safe direction whether cylinder is empty or full---just in case! (This does not work with my model 97 6 shot 22lr) :-) pg
