Price Check
« on: July 21, 2005, 05:11:25 AM »
The other day I saw a used Model 83 Premier Grade .454 with a 7 1/2'' barrel.  To the knowledge of the gun dealer, this gun did not have any of the factory options nor did it have the original box/paperwork.  The finish on the gun looked great and it appeared to have been fired very little.  What would any of you consider to be a reasonable asking price for this FA?  I would appreciate all the advice I could get as I really don't know what is fair and don't want to get burned.

If it's a field grade it'll have Pachmayer rubber grips and options would be whatever sights the original purchaser ordered on it. Premere grade will have hard wood grips. The biggest option in ordering one would be the barrel length and we know that's 7 1/2 inches.

How much did the dealer ask for it ??

I know for sure that the gun is a premier grade.  When I said options I meant things like the factory action job, overtravel screw, inverted crown, etc.  I forgot to mention that this is a gun I saw on the internet, so all I know about it is from what I have seen in a picture and what the dealer said over the phone.  He is asking $1300.
Thanks.

Thats a lot cheaper than ordering one, I think you could get your money back on it, Its about 350.00 off the factory price. It would be hard for me to turn it down.......Joe...........

I thought a new Model 83 Premier Grade .454 with a 7 1/2'' barrel, was closer to $2000.00???

I have seen them used from $1350.00 to $1450.00 for the  Model 83 Premier Grade .454. $1300.00 sounds like a fair price as long as it is in very good condition.  :D

You guys are paying too dang much. Need to find another dealer. I'd not want to go $1300 used personally. Around here new is I think around $1600 at most even with the options. I once saw a Field Grade waiting for new owner to pick up with the Micarta grips, action job and NIB for under $1100 and this wasn't so long ago.

And there is no warranty on a used Premier so you'd do better with a new field grade at least you'd have a one year warranty. Nope I'd go new and get the warranty rather than save $300.

Dido Greybeard, my field grade 83 was $1200.00 a year ago. Full retail is about $1800.00 but I bought it new from a gunsmith friend that ordered it for me.

It did have some serious problems when it arrived. I went to pick it up, took it out of the box to look at it, put it back in the box and told him to send it back, I didn't want it. He called Bob Baker at FA and discussed it. Shipped it to Bob Baker not the service dept. To FA's credit it was returned in a week with a new barrel and new cylinder and was up to FA's reputation and standards.

The point of this being the warranty. A couple of years ago a friend bought a used model 83 in 357 for $1200.00 and couldn't make it shoot. Sending it back to FA cost $380.00 and it is a great shooter now but he's in it $1580.00 plus shipping, aggravation and time.

For $1300.00 I would pass and get a new one.

I paid $1450.00 for mine. But I also got a TSOB mount and a Bushnell 2X6X32 Scope and $300.00 of factory ammo. :D  :-D
