once again i am posting about the blue ridge rifle by pedersoli. I need to know weather it can handle 100 shots with sabbots. i also need to know if the sights are good enough to see 100 yards. Im an average person and this is what looks to be a good BP rifle, and the price is good, are there any other good beginner rifles out there that i should give a try? :-)

I did have a chance last week at the range to handle the blue ridge,I also had my eye on the 54 cal. in a flinter.
The sight on the gun  for me will not cut it at  the 100 yard target, second even the rifle only weighing 7 1/2 pounds was still to barrel heavy for off hand shooting.
I have to say for hunting you can't beat the t/c and there warranty is outstanding

Any open sights are what they are and their effectiveness will be determined by your ability and the sharpness of your vision.  I still use open sights but my eyes "ain't what they used to be".  I limit my shooting while hunting with them to 75 yards on whitetail sized game and 20-30 yards on squirrels and such.

If you're looking at a traditoinal rifle why would you want to use anything other than a patched round ball?   The PRB is certainly more than effective at ranges one can reasonbly expect to shoot accurately with open sights.

Generally, not always, twist rates above 1-48 in calibers of 45 and above aren't the best choice for sabots, (pronounced  "say-bo"), and pistol bullets.  I don't know what the Blue Ridge twist is.

My choice and recommendation for an entry level rifle has always been a cap lock, Lyman Great Plains rifle in 54 cal., even tho I no longer own one. Lyman also markets the Great Plains Hunter which is the same rifle with a faster twist barrel for those who wish to shoot something other than the PRB.  There are certainly no flys on the TC's, I just prefer the Lyman.

This lad evidently wants to shoot sabots at elk and big northern mulies, he wants a gun with the old styling, and doesn't want to hear that sabots ain't what he wants to shoot at them critters.  :-D

I didn't tell him what he wanted to shoot, I asked a question.  His question was would the Blue Ridge handle sabots and the capabilities of open sights.  It didn't imply anything about what game it may or may not be used on.  In addition, the PRB is perfectly adequate for elk or mulies, as with any rifle, within it's limits.

While I'm replying, I see that you're 14.  Unless you have or need corrective lenses your 14 year old eyes will be fine with open sights, perhaps out to 150 yards......I'm envious of your young eyes!!!!  Good luck whichever you choose.

OK! NO, It Won't Shoot Sabots! how's that for an answer?

"Sabots" are pistol bullets in a plastic sleeve that require a fast rate of rifling twist to be accurate.
The roundball because it is really a sphere made of lead, requires' a slow rate of twist for it's best accuracy.
"Conicals" are full bore diameter, full lead projectiles such as the "minnie-ball", "maxi-ball" or "ballet's".
Now you've seen "rate of twist" mentioned a few tymes right?(1:48,1:60,1:32,,,etc.) allow me to explain,,let's use a 1:60 rated rifle twist as an example.
1:60 means,  the rifleing will make one full rotation in 60"s.(period).
If you have a 30" barrel,, with a 1:60 twist,, the "land and gooves" of the "rifleing" will make a 1/2 revolution from the "breech" to the "muzzle"( or turn only 180 degrees from back to front).
Long, slender, pointed projectiles and spheres each have their own properties and requirments for true accuracy.

Uhm, the Lyman "GreatPlains" style is available in cap and flint from several suppliers,,,
The "GreatPlains Rifle" offers a 1:60 twist.
The "GreatPlains Hunter" offers a 1:32 twist. and the barrels can be bought seprate and are interchangable.

Please use the words above that I "quoted"  with the "Search" thingy at the top of this page and read-up some,,trust me it'll help you alot!!! :D
i'm a realist. i've not seen it all, but man ,,I've Been Around the block once or twice

arkansas toothpick,

You really won't know for sure until you try - but the 1/48 twist 54 Blue Ridge will shoot sabots and with the length of the barrel it will do a very good job of it.  In Idaho you can use sabots during muzzleloading season and there are a lot of new bullets out there designed for muzzleloaders and sabots.  A lot of old-timers will tell you - you need to launch a cannonball of lead at then there animals to get them - not so...

Check your other post and if you want any more information let me know, you are just down the road a couple of 100 miles...

Good luck
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....
