.223 on SB1 frame?
« on: July 24, 2005, 11:44:17 AM »
Is the SB1 strong enough for a .223? I know why you shouldn't put rifle barrels on shotguns but .223 is pretty small. And does anyone know if a sportster barrel will fit on a centerfire frame? Yes i know the firing pin will be in the wrong place. But i have wildcat plans.

HODGDON --- lists the 223 rem at between 45,000 and 55,000 cup and the 7mm rem mag at about the same - so don't let the size fool  you!!!

As for the rim fire barrel on a center fire frame i can't see the barrel being proof tested for any kind of center fire pressures .

I don't think i would ever try it

The sportster barrels will fit the SB-2 frames, or so it has been posted over on the yahoo groups board. One of the members there had his 17HMR rechambered to 17Rem. Sounded like a sweet conversion actually. As far as shooting the .223 on an SB-1 goes, I don't know, I been shooting a 30-30 on one for a while and just got an extra SB-2 recently so I ain't anymore, but I never had any problems. But it's always in the back of your mind that is supposed to be unsafe ya know? Some here would say that it would be ok, but I'd say it would be best to find some good balistics charts on the .223 and check the chamber pressures that it produces versus the other rounds most commonly shot from the SB-1's........357, 44mag, 30-30, 22H, or all of the so-called low pressure rounds.

The .223 on an SB1 frame has been discussed before, it would not be a good idea if you want to continue to use that frame, it may work for a while, but I'd be willing to wager a large sum that it won't last for long. As for the 30-30 analogy, the 30-30 has a SAAMI pressure of 42kpsi compared to the .223's 55kcup which is a considerable difference.

Here's a previous thread on the effects of a high pressure caliber being used on an SB1 frame.....
