I believe you are correct, I think you will have to remove the spring to get it back to where you need it. The best way I have found to remove the spring is to lay the frame on its right side with the barrel hinge pin hole to the left and the bottom of the frame toward you (triggerguard removed). Then you can push the pin that goes through the spring downward just enough to get the spring out. Leave the pin through the other little piece that is under and around the spring. It will make it a ton easier to reassemble.
Tweak the spring, put it back in, reinstall the trigger guard and give it a try. Repeat if necessary.
