weaver mount on encore

I installed a weaver mount on my black powder. I put a small layer of gun grease between the barrel and mount . Well I removed the mount today and the finish was off along with rust. What did I do wrong?

I suspect the grease acted to isolate the area and hold moisture containing black powder fouling against the metal.  I usually don't grease these areas, prefering to allow the normal lubrication af the weapon handle the problem.  I would suggest that wax may be a longer lasting protectant..  Or a protection product I've used called 'Rust Prevent-it'.
