Author Topic: 25-06 or 270 for Antelope and deer (Read 1206 times)

Gentlemen I need all the help I can get. I need a new rifle for Antelope and Deer for this season. I was playing with a bolt in 270WSM but I like the Ultras better. Which cal is the better choice in a Handi? Recoil is a consideration in such a small package. i love my 223 and just need a toy to hunt with. Antelope here in NM have a tendency to be the other side of 200 yars. Flat as a table top with very little cover. Your help is needed! :-)

25-06 hands down...unless you can get one of the 270 Ultra-Comp's...

I like the 25-06. A little less recoil than the 270 and can double as a varmint rifle.

My 25-06s have been doing antelope here in Montana for years: H&R, Browning, Remington and Tikas.

Gentlemen thanks for your input. I was leaning toward the 25-06 and think it's the best one overall. In fact it will be my primary deer and antelope gun. My elk gun is now going to be a 300WSM in a Weatherby Vanguard. i'll post a picture of my Antelope in september.

of those two calibers I would also vote for the 25-06. Great flat shooter. If you're getting the 300 you may even consider the 243 for a choice that is right in between the 300 and your 223. It is also a great flat shooter and plenty of gun for the goats. Or you could get both....

The 25-06 would be the best choice.

Wally, you have done my dream hunt.......It may not seem like much too you to hunt antelope, but there are none in TN. I've always wanted to go out there for a hunt.

I concur with the 25-06.

Hunted Antelope for many years all with 25cal rifles but non 25-06.
I f I get a tag this year I will use my new 257 Roberts Handi. I do have a 25-06 in a Ruger#1. A flat shooting 25 is hard to beat in the prairie.

Reloder 22 and the new Barnes 100gr TSX bullet is the powder and bullet for the 25-06.

I'm a big-bore person, and naturally I'd select the .270.. .....but, the 25-06 would be my thought-out choice in your situation.

I would send your 25-06 in and have a 270 Ultra-Comp barrel put on it for Elk...provided you feel comfortable with a single shot for Elk hunting...that is...and that way you have both :wink:

Single-shot for elk?

I've shot a lot of elk, and never used more than one shot each for puttin em on the ground. The only secondary concern with a single-shot is if those elk are hunted in the same area as other top-of-the-food-chain critters such as griz and cougar....then a suitable handgun might be advisable in addition to the rifle.

I never shoot a buck, they are pretty strong and smell bad.

It depends where you hunt them. The Sage variety are not to my liking.
I apply for a permit only in farm aeries where they eat alfalfa.
Best eating game meat ever.

If I don't get a permit in that zone I don'y hunt them period. Always try for a head shot if at all possible so they don't run after being hit, or ruin a lot of good meat. Dry does are best, or a young critter.

No doubt sir the 25/06! For the past several years except one I have paid
a visit to the Wyoming "Speedgoats". Each trip even though I have several
good Antelope calibers, I take a 25-06 each trip & have shot all but
1 with one except for an extra Doe tag that I filled with a Contender 14"
30-30AI. My brother does the same & our shots have varied from 140 yards to 430 yards. In all cases the round has been devastating using
100 Gr. TSX ,115 TSX or 120 Part. Most were killed with Sendero's but
we will this year take a H&R Ultra 25-06 also. The nice thing about the
25-06 H&R as opposed to the .270 is the 26" tube that allows you to extract the max. in 25-06 effectiveness. I think the 25-06, 25-06 AI. & .257 Wea. are the top of the heap in Antelope rounds. I sent off my
Sendero off today to get my Sendro "Ackleyed" even though it it not
necessary. But it sure is fun.

I must admit I put a handi 25-06 on layaway I bought another rifle that just kept calling my name. It's a Interarms Mark X Mauser in 6mm rem with a bell and carlson stock 26" heavy barrel and a 4x16x scope for the sum of $ 325.00. It's never been used and looks like new. I will be shooting the handi 25-06 in the near future, but that 6mm just had my name on it. :-) Jess
