Brass sticking in chamber of REM 7400
« on: July 30, 2005, 04:16:00 AM »
I have a 7400 in 30-06 I bought NIB back in 1982. After a through cleaning I went to sight it in with a couple of boxes of Winchester 180gr silvertips. Almost every time I shot it (at least 2 out of 3) it would tear the rim off the fired case where the extractor grabs it and leave it in the chamber. I could run a cleaning rod down the barrel and just barely touch the case and it would fall out. I tried some REM ammo and it worked great and have since put several hundred rounds of diffrent brands (REM, FEDERAL, NORMA) of ammo through it without any problem what so ever.In recent years I have tried the Winchester stuff again thinking maybe the gun just needed a little breaking in but had the same results. Any one have any ideas why it would do this with the Winchester ammo? Thanks

I used to have the same problem with handloads in my 742.  The powder I used to load was too slow burning to allow the gas control system to work properly.  My cases were still under high pressure (and expanded from the heat) when the action tried to open, and the extractor would rip my rims.  I switched to a faster burning powder, and the problem went away.

Since you're using factory ammo in a relatively new gun (at the time), it's unlikely this is the exact problem you're having.

In the old days Remington used to supply a chamber brush with all new 742's, but I don't know if this is the case with the newer 7400s.  This brush had a bent handle, and was intended for cleaning powder residue out of the chamber.

Autos still have some of the products of powder combustion under some pressure in the barrel when the action begins to extract the brass.  This allows some blow back of this residue into the chamber.  It's best to clean it regularly in a Remington auto.  If you don't have a chamber brush, I recommend getting one - and using it.

I suppose there may also be a rough chamber in your rifle, but since the Remington ammo works OK this is highly unlikely.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

I have had a 742 for 27 years and from day one it would do the same thing with Winchester Ammo.  For some reason it just won't eject Winchester ammo.  I have used either Remington, or my own handloads  exclusively for the past 27 years with no problems.  Every once and a while I'll get the urge to try some Winchesters and sure enough they don't eject.  Remington autos are really much more reliable than people give them credit for.  I'm sure if you try some Remington ammo your's will be too.
