30/30 g2 carbine range?
« on: July 26, 2005, 05:50:24 PM »
Hello all,

what do you think the effective range of the the 23 inch g2 30/30 is?  I am thinking of getting the 30/30 since it is available in a factory barrel and I already have the dies and brass for it!!

thanks

as you are going to use them in a single shot rifle, your not bound to using flat nosed bullets.
i would think that the use of spitzer bullets will increase your range.
perhaps someone with a balistics calculator could find the b.c. of 150 and 170 spitzer bullets and run them for you. at speeds you can push them out of a 23 inch barrel.

My first Contender Carbine barrel was a 21" 30/30... with Sierra 135 grain spitzers, i could make it shoot 3 shots groups at about 1.5" at 100 yards, and at 200 i got groups closer to 4". Not exactly a benchrest winner, but i would not have hesitated to take some 200 yards shots. My barrel also shot the 150 grain Hornady Sipre points about the same... i only tried one factory load, the Rem 150's, and they grouped about 2.5" at 100, i never tried them at 200. If you are a handloader, and do some experimentation, i think you could make that barrel shoot well enough to try a 250 yard shot, if you have a good solid rest.

depends on the 'nutt behind the butt' and quality of the barrel, ammo and conditions...among other things. Concievably its a 200 yd. gun ........
