Hornady 300 XTP
« on: August 24, 2005, 07:02:55 AM »
I should like to try 300 gr. XTP in my .454 for this year`s hunt.
To avoid too fast expanding - the load is as low as 1380 fps.
Somebody of you guys - who have tried this bullet at a velocity like that?
If: What kind of animal did you shoot? Distance? Penetration? Expansion?

Which 300 XTP will you be using?  Hornady has two - one designed for the .45LC and the other for the .454.  I'd suggest the "Mag" version for several reasons.

Severre--- I called the Freedom Arms factory to inquire about using the 300 xtp Mag bullet in my .454 Casull and was told to keep the velocity below 1700 fps so as not to destroy the bullet and the forcing cone of the gun. I was told to only use the harder 300xtp Mag bullet. If you can get the 300 xtp mag bullets, use them for your .454 Casull.  :D pg

you'll still get some expansion, the 480 uses a 325gr XTP going 1325 if you dont want it to back it down to 1100fps.
