Remington 7400 or Win. 100 ?
« on: July 04, 2005, 07:42:00 AM »
I have a BAR lightweight but I need another rifle. I Can't afford another Bar so my choice is either a Rem 7400 or a Win 100
What would you buy and why ? (I like the way the 100's feel but I've herd a lot of bad things about them) Which would be the most accurate and reliable ?

For what its worth I've heard the same thing about Remington's 7400 well I have a model 100 in 308 and a 742 in 3006 and they both are good 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inch guns and both function well. I also have a BAR in 7 mag and the thing is Keep them CLEAN one other thing is to keep them CLEAN all three makes need to have regular cleaning.

Concerning my new Remington 7400 in 30-06:

Initially, the first 50 rounds produced jams every third round, so I went to work on it by bedding the action / stock / installing a LimbSaver Barrel De-Resonator / adjusting the trigger to 3 lbs., and dry-firing / working the action 1,000 times.

A major and very thorough cleaning of the action and chamber was performed. Did I say take your time and pay close attention to detail in cleaning the action / chamber / bolt?

Afterwards, the 7400 30-06 has not jammed in the last 200 rounds and is shooting groups that vary between 7/8" and 1 1/8" off a benchrest and 1 3/4" to 2" groups offhand - using 180-gr. Federal Solid Base rounds.

Speer Hot Core 165-gr. were slightly more accurate and shot the smaller groups, with the 180-gr.'s being the largest, but not my a large margin.

Will try some Nosler Ballistic Tips and AccuBonds next.

I had a Win 100 in .308.  Shot ok but was to dam(n) heavy (for me).
Never had any trouble out of it and only used it in bad weather.  That`s
how much i didn`t like it.  Some times you get guns you just don`t like.
Got rid of it and picked up a really nice Savage 99 in .300. Life is good.
Course now i need another "bad" weather gun. Maybe i should have
   kept the 100.

147 Grain:

I like your "action" picture of the Nosler AccuBond bullet.
I`ve got an OLD .35 Reminton Core-lokt that i took out of a deer years ago and it looks just like the last snippet in yours.
           Results as advertised.  Life good.
