243 handi bad accuracy?
« on: August 05, 2005, 05:39:46 AM »
Hey guys newbe here.  I have a 243 that the action is loose when I close in up. I can wiggle side to side and feel slight bump and movement. shots are all over the place 12'' group at best although it may put two shots together at times. Seems to have about three different spots it wants to group but their very far apart.  I have a huntsman barrel and it fits tight can not feel any movement and its shoots a good consistent group. Do you think the looseness is the problem with the 243 and what can I do to fix it.? I've tried 4 different brand bullets all same results. And 3 scopes. Tried oring and even tried the forearm that came with the huntsman barrel same results.

Welcome aboard!!! If the frame is an SB1 which originally came with the Huntsman, it should not be used with a high pressure barrel like the .243. If the frame and barrel were factory fitted, the last 3 digits of the frame serial number will be marked on the left side of the barrel underlug. If they match, I'd contact H&R and see if you can't get it fixed. What color is the frame? If it's color case hardened, kinda of speckled, it's probably an SB1 frame.

Check it out,

Tim

Its black.  I bought it as a handi 243 and added the huntsman barrel.

I'd contact H&R for repair, then....it shouldn't be loose. If they won't work on it, check the FAQ for barrel fitting instructions, it can be fixed at home if you're the DIY kind of person.

The 243 I use to have had the same problem. I did get it to shoot good by using feeler gauge to tighten  it up.  It took a .0045 to shim it properly and after that it shot quite well.  But Quick is right send it back if it is not tight it will not shoot.
