What do I need to change besides barrel and catridge carriers. is there any tricks?

Are the rim diameters the same?
If not, a new bolt is probably cheaper than a modified one.
If not it may not fit through the loading port.

I always wondered how they worked out the difference in cartridge length for the feed mechanism. Does it matter?

The rims on a 30-30 measured .498 to .502 depending on manufacture. The 45 rims measured .499 to .505. I dont think this will be a problem.

You could buy a new Winchester or Marlin for the cost of this conversion. Just my 2cents worth!!
