My nephew turned 5 about a week ago, and I presented him with a double rig made out of 8-9 oz. veg tanned leather. The holsters look like Mexican loop from the front, but the loops are actually riveted on the skirt, rather than cut slits. In fact, I put the whole rig together with copper rivets, because they look nice and they're waaaay faster than hand sewing. I gave the leather an antique looking finish by heating it and rubbing in hot, molten Sno-Seal, a commercial blend of beeswax and oil. Before applying the finish, I wet formed the holsters to a pair of cap guns and allowed them to dry. The belt buckle is a full sized brass rectangular buckle with clipped corners. All leather edges were burnished and then coated with a dark brown edge sealant. Unfortunately, I forgot about his birthday until the last minute, so there was no time to carve, tool, or stamp anything into the leather.
