Would you take a chance on a used Model 700 adl ?

I bought one of the NEW Stevens 200's in .243 couldn't get to shoot like  I wanted.sold it. So I went to searching for an old Rem. 700 like I had in 1967. That rifle shot anything into 3/4 or less. Anyway I found one on an auction site Described as haveing a excellent bbl. some scratches &dents worth mentioningon the metal and scratches on the stock(that doesn't matter to me)
  When I had my old Remington I used one load for everything .85 grn Nosler HP (can't find them anymore) and killed Truckloads of antelope.deer.mule deer,wildboar and varmits. Bang flop every time.
   Anyway I'm looking at this rifle on the auction site, What do you think would be a fair price for it or how much should I bid. Would you take a chance ? :?

Well, of course, this gun might not shoot as well as your old 700 did. It could shoot worse than the Stevens for all you know. So yes, you are taking a chance on buying it in hopes of it producing the same accuracy as your super-shooter 700.

As far as fair price is concerned, that depends on the condition of the rifle. I would bid no more than $400; for that, you can get a newer used rifle.

Now that I think about it, I should have informed you. Honestly, I didnt think Id be so tired after sitting around every day, but with the nerves rattled, I just felt drained. To make matters worse, I was getting little sleep with everything on my mind, and I got a cold that hung around for almost 2 weeks.

Im in better spirits now though!

I think the forum managed itself quite well with your short abscence. I did notice you weren't posting and wondered why...but oh well. Glad to have you back! And yes, let's wait to hear this gentleman's report on the gun :D

I bought my model 700 for $300.It was 2years old,caliber 25-06,no scope
but it sure was taken care of.I put a cheap scope on it and it shoots like a dream.Its one of them guns thats a keeper. 8)

Between us, my hunting pards and I have owned more than a dozen 700's, from 1963 to 2003. Over that 40 year span, there have been lots of detail changes in the model...from little stuff like buttplates and grip caps, to steel formulas and trigger group/safety configurations. All of our guns were bought new or as-new, and after careful examination.
I don't advocate buying on internet sites, sight unseen. You have to learn what to look for, and see for yourself. This may mean a trip to the ONE good stocking gun store in your state. But it's worth it. And if your careful exam misses something that crops up later, the store had better be one that will help make it right. We have never had a bum 700. Most have been superb shooters. And when one was sold or traded, the next owner got a bargain. Try to be that 'next owner'!!! Good luck!

I bought a used 700 BDL (25-06) back in the 80's. I got it to shoot 1/2 MOA with handloaded 120 gr. Nosler Partitions at 3080 FPS (Chronographed). I killed a bunch of game with that rifle. Then I got a case of the D--- A-- and gave it to my brother as a college graduation gift. Now I can't buy it back from him.

Heck yes buy it, just don't pay over $400 for it even in good shape. If you don't like it you can get your money back.  :-)

I would much prefer an older Model 700 to the new guns. The older guns, pre-1995 or so, had much superior triggers and they don't have that ridiculous J-lock on the bolt.

I bought a 2004 "Classic" in 8x57 and the screws on the receiver for mounting the scope were actually mis-aligned. How bad is that!?  :?

I am currently in the process of getting a 1983 Model 700 Classic in .300 H&H. It is absolutely mint condition. Looks like it just came out of the box!

I'm sure you've either bought it or passed on it by now, but if you can get it for a decent price, go for it.  I have two Remington 700's, one .270W and one .25-06 that I bought in used, very good condition.  Neither one left anything to be diesired in comparison to a new one.

Folks get all bent out of shape by marketing and go out and get the rifle/cailber du jour.  Many have to sell perfectly good rifles to do it.  There usually is some science to all this "latest and greatest" stuff that comes out.  Little of it is a true breakthrough however.  The 700 ADL you are looking at is 95% as good as a brand new gun at 60% of the price.

As I have posted elsewhere tonight (my first night here by the way), I have a new CDL in .243W being paid out at the local sporting goods store.  It doesn't have the J-lock on the bolt.  I'm not sure why not.  Have they discontinued that "feature"?
