Green Mountian barrels/NEF
« on: August 31, 2005, 05:41:07 PM »
Talked to the Green mountian people today, they would not admit to making barrels for NEF, but hinted I was correct.  The told me that they made all the blued barrels (both CF and RF) from the same material, so I am wondering if I would blow my self up if I bought a 17 hmr barrel and chambered it for a 17 Remington or 17-223.  I can get a new Handi in 17 hmr for $139.00, and just chamber ream the barrel, put in a new extractor and put it in my .223 frame.  Am I missing something that will leave me without my hands?  Larry

The .17 HMR is a Sportster not a Handi, what that means is the firing pin is higher for the rimfire and would not work on a modified to center fire barrel. The barrel might be able to be fitted to a SB-2 frame by you or a Smith though after the barrel mod is complete. Just so you know.

The barrels seem exactly the same, (at least the hole is in the middle) I am going to take my frame in and see if the barrel fits correctly, if it does I think it would be worth a few bucks to see if it will work, what fun, a 4,300fps 17 cal Handi.  Larry

A 17hmr barrel will fit on an SB2 frame, I've tried mine on it to see where the firing pin impacts a .17hmr cartridge.... pretty much smack dab in the middle, not far enough out to set a rimfire round off.

Someone on the Yahoo NEF group did convert a 17HMR barrel to 17 Rem, but not sure how it worked out.  Sounds like it should work to me.

You didn't think to ask them what their tolerances for barrel specs were did you? Woud be interesting to see if they are the same as NEF barrels. Do you know what type of rifling they use on their own barrels?
