I have been a long time target shooter, but more in the line of plinking rather than actual competition. Recently I have started shooting in Cowboy Action Shooting events and am really enjoying the sport. My one concern is that in CAS events much of the focus is on time rather than on accuracy. Accuracy plays a part, but it is of less importance than time. I usually only miss one or two targets over the course of six stages (typically 60 pistol, 60 rifle, & 24 shotgun shots, for a total of 144 shots) but my times are high compared to others.
As a result I am also interested in participating in some small bore (.22 cal) matches where the focus is on accuracy if I can find any locally. Here's my question; how do you find out if it is legal to shoot on your property without approaching the local law enforcement folks. I live on six acres and have a spot that is quite similiar to the bunkers that are used at many ranges. They usually have high banks on three sides, I have high banks on two sides and a barn on the third side. My location is surrounded by woods that I own. I believe that what I have is a perfect practice spot, but I want to be sure that I will be legal before I do much shooting at home. My closest neighbor is probably 130 yards away and is shielded from the shooting area by the barn and woods. I know that the .22 caliber noise is slight, and that probably no one will complain. So how do I find out what is legal.
