Recently I've been seeing quite a few brand new rifles coming in the shop with some sort of purple stuff on the bolt face, lugs, and in the bore. These have been Savages, Remingtons, and Winchesters. The stuff comes off reluctantly with Shooter's Choice, not at all with safety cleen solvent, and easily with acetone. Anybody else seen this and do you have any idea what it is, or why it's there?

Some kind of rust preventative perhaps?  The AcraGlass release that Brownells puts in with it's kits leaves a blueish film..I don't use it anymore though..  I certainly hope it's not in the trigger mechanisms.. especially the remingtons.  I'll bet its something to keep the bare steel from rusting..  Anybody else got any ideas../?

It's a synthetic rust prohibitor. It is a little tough to clean off, but thats the point of a prohibitor. We use it in on new machines/tools before shipping. Color varies by manufacturer.

I've always thought it was an indicator - so they can be sure the contact is good on the machined surfaces.  Kind of like the blue paper the dentist makes you bite down on after fixing a tooth...I've only noticed it on the bolt face, lugs and chamber.
