Truing Savage receivers

For years we've been blueprinting Remington actions with good success. Tonight I decided to try our tooling on a Savage I have to see how it works. Well, the tools work great and I could set it up with no problem since they're very similar in bolt and outer diameter. What I found was interesting. The barrel thread's centerline was not the same as the bolt's, but they are parallel. My theory is the threads are milled in at the same time as the lug seats and closing cams, so they're straight. I have never seen a Remington that was as straight, as they seem to be cut with taps instead of milled. The Savage's front was way off, about .004,  but the lug seats were dead on. Now I see one of the reasons these Savages seem to shoot well out of the box, and I'm pleased the threads don't need to be recut to make them straight. Is anyone else out there in GB land messing with these actions? I'm aware of Sharp Shooter, but not anyone else doing much with them. This one's going to get barreled up without the nut, and using a Remington recoil lug. We'll soon see what she'll do!

I've seen the rifles put together without the nut and with a custom built nut.  I kinda like the idea of the nut and they shoot great but couldn't get around the appearance.  The new trigger may well end my resistance.  Reakky don't know what I'd want... perhaps a 240 Gibbs.. although I bought a Ruger No.1 in 6mm for just that conversion.  If of course I can't get the thing to shoot decent..so far the Ruger is not shooting too well..  I've already got a reamer just need the headspace guages and a  set of dies..  Of course as I age I get more and more behind.  Time becomes a big deal!  The idea of creating the brass to feed the Gibbs is not as bright and shiney as it once was.  I've an old friend who has been using a 110 in 243 for at least 30 years to shoot deer..  He hasn't been let down yet.. Though in the last few decades the muzzle loader and pistol have taken some of the spotlight..  Get us some pictures...  I just finished stocking a M700 TI.  I'm gonna take some photoes and see if I can giure out how to post them..

Sounds good. I don't know when I'll get it done, I'm building a new silo rifle as well that's taking most of my evenings. I have a takeoff Rem 7mm-08 barrel from an old BDL varmint that's going to get cut back and installed on the Savage, and it'll all go in one of the new B&C tactical stocks. It should be a fun shooter in the sniper matches we have around here, and maybe get used for silo as well. I haven't decided whether to make it a 7mm-08 or a 7 BR, I've got reamers for both. I've never tried posting pictures here, so that will be a new adventure as well.
Funny you'd mention a 700 TI - I just finished truing one up yesterday. They're pretty good - much straighter than the regular 700s, it cleaned up at 1.075". It's getting a 16 1/4" fluted Kreiger barrel, and pillar bedded into the factory stock. The sexy fluted bolt it came with is way too small in diameter and binds up so it is getting replaced with one of those new bolt bodies that Midway sells. If you replace the barrel on one of those actions, make sure you use copper based anti seize grease to lubricate the threads or they'll stick and gall. You don't want to go there! (It didn't happen to this one, but it'd be easy to do.) Hope yours turns out wonderfully!
