Enough gun for Bear 30-06 or 35 Whelen , no Grizzy or Browns

Please tell me if I need a 35 Whelen over a 30-06 for large Canadian Bear? If I don't maybe I will get a different toy.  Thanks  Buckfever

Either will work fine with the right bullet. But don't let that stop you from buying another gun.  :D

THe 30/06 with a good premium bullet is plenty of power for a bear.  It is never a bad idea to get a 35 whelen, great all around cartridge.   The extra bullet mass of the whelen is always nice but you could probably get by with your 30/06.

The 30-06 is more that enough for Black Bear provided you use a good bullet like a Nosler Partition and use proper shot placement.
However, the 35 Whelen hits a lot harder. I know first hand because I have killed Blk Bear with both 30-06 and 35 Whelen and Nosler Partitions.

An added advantage of larger diameter holes: bears tend to develop lots of fat and hair in the fall to impede blood trails.  If you don't have snow on the ground, tracking can be hard without blood.  Bigger holes mean more blood...

The .30-06 with the right bullet will handle the biggest Black Bear that ever walked this Earth.  But if you have a want for a .35 Whelen that it is a great excuse to get one.  Lawdog
