460 S&W barrel, recoil and versatility
« on: July 26, 2006, 04:30:41 PM »
I was wondering if anyone owns or has any experience with this caliber?  I am thinking of purchasing one and wanted to know how wicked the recoil would be.  I have a 308 barrel and that's ok to shoot but not sure how much more the 460 would be.  Thanks.

Recoil is worse than my 45-70 and 7mm-08, fun to shoot with hot 45 colt loads, and 454 Casulls aren't too bad.I'm 65 with bad wrist, but I can still shoot the 460, mainly just for deer hunting though......NO target practice!

Put in ear plugs, then ear muffs, a weight lifter's glove on the right hand, a cushion under the right elbow (assming you're right handed) and then it's not too bad off the bench.  I would shoot mine a lot more but I don't want to irritate my neighbors.

Shooting it off hand really isn't bad at all.  It's definitely stiffer though than a 30/30, a 7mm/08 or a 454 Cassull.

I had one, I shot it a lot, and the recoil was not bad in my opinion, but it also has a muzzle break from Dave White that worked great. I sold it to a member here.  If you shoot it without a muzzle break you will know you shot a monster. The Encore pistol has a tendency to give you a slap of recoil with straight wall cartridges.   ;D
