17HMR vs. 22 Mag
« on: May 24, 2006, 04:59:30 PM »
I have a little debate going on at another forum.  Anyone want to share their opinion on what advantage if any the 17HMR has over the 22 Mag?  It's your opinion so you choose the details.  Distance, size or type of game or varmints etc. etc...

17HMR vs. 22 Mag

The big advantage of the 17 over the 22mag is range and usually accuracy. I have both and have shot a variety of both in different guns. The 17HMR is very accurate and flat shooting in comparison to the Mag. The Mag has more ft/lbs but is less frangible.  I feel there is no difference in game that either are capable of taking with a well placed shot. On coyotes, I wouldn't shoot past 100yds with either. Fox, groundhogs, crows, and other smaller game, I take longer shots with the HMR because it is much flatter and more accurate making longer shots easier. The Mag is capable of clean kills at the same ranges as the HMR, but hitting your target in the right place is much harder with the Mag. Bottom line, 100yds and under I would not care which one I had in my hands. Past that I would stick to the HMR.

I really like 17 HMR for the accuracy.. I have taken a few Jack rabbits past 140 yards and I have friend that has 22 mag. he is starting to see the advatage of the flat shooting 17 HMR.

Having both in my rifles...I have to agree with AJ and Mang..
The Mag has just a bit more wallop...but needs it, since it is not as likely to produce clean headshots on varmints, as is the .17 HMR....

go to varmint al's page. it will show you how much better the 17 is over 22 mag.  the 22 mag doesn't compete with the 17 , until you get past 150 yds. and that 's just in energy. of course by the time the 22 mag makes it to 200 yds, it has been blown off course about twice as much as the 17, and hey i am a huge 22 mag fan.  the 17 moves so much less because it is so much faster.
