Here's the problem. I have a .223 Ultra barrel that I bought new from H&R, and I had it fitted to my Ultra .25-06 frame. Well, I recently came across an extra frame for the .223 barrel. The barrel doesn't lock up very tight on the new frame, and has a lot of lateral play. I called H&R customer service about having the barrel fitted to the new frame, and they said it would be $20. however, she stated there would be no guarantees it would work because the barrel had all ready been fitted to a different frame.

So, is there an easy way to tighten up the barrel/frame lock up? Should I try sending it to H&R, where I could possibly spend $35 for something that won't work? Or, should I simply post the barrel on eBay and buy an entirely new barrel to fit to the new frame?

The .223 barel I have now has less than 35 rounds through it, so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Ahem.....FAQ....barrel fitting 101.... :grin: Hmmm, everyone up until now has said H&R wouldn't fit a used barrel....

Perhaps they are slowly realizing what we have been doing for years...for free...and now want to charge for it?

Yup, maybe now they charge $20 and if it's not an easy fix, they don't do it saying it can't be fit!!! I'm guessing they won't fit it if it's too loose, but will if the pivot needs a bit of relieving...... Or....it could be more mis-info. :?

If it is verified as being the new way at NEF...it will be a great...but I don't know if they will build up the lug and then refit it for only this amount...seems kind of costly...now filing down one shouldn't be any problem...but...if they would...WOW...that would be something...especially for those who don't have the mechanical skills or the space and tools to do this...

I'm not positive, but I think I spoke to Jennifer. I would try to resolve thr problem myself, but it would require me shimming the pivot pin (which I don't want to bother with). If it was a matter of simply working the lug, then I would be all over it.

Yup, fitting a loose barrel is a lot more work that a tight one. It also helps to have more than one frame, if it won't fit one, it will fit another. The 7mm-08 barrel I just bought was loose on the first 2 frames I tried it on, but the 3rd and 4th locked up real good, so good on one of em, it locks up tight on a .001" feeler gauge blade!!! :grin:

Yeah, I've tried the barrel on four differnet frames, but no solid lock up yet. Makes me wonder how it fit the first frame!

OK, Mac, you're our guy. Can you get us the straight story on this Factory Fitting Thing.? That would sure be a great option, to be able to send any frame, with any barrel and have them fit it. How 'bout it Mac, will you check out this story and let us know? Thanks
