Lapping what's the deal?
« on: August 14, 2005, 03:40:27 PM »
I have a 243 superlight it wont shoot a group. 6'' at best at 100yds. I saw in the sticky above that you need to lap the barrel why?  Never have done this with any other gun and have had great groups. This gun is about 7 years old never could get it to group, wrote it off as a cheap gun get what you pay for. Killed a couple of hogs with it and son shot a 7pt at 35yds. Do you think the lapping will help this gun I have only shot about 2 boxes of shells through it?

Assuming all else is ok such as scope and mounts,
lapping and a good free float O ring (glass bed I like better) may help. From what I have heard others say the super light .243 are very heat sensitive. I would just do two shot groups  and let the barrel cool before doing another. I am not sure if you are a reloader or not, but if you are not I am sure someone here can point you in a good direction with some  factory ammo that works best for them . Best of Luck.

No it will not do any thing for a 6" group. You have a few loose joints and a latch that does not engage enough and moves. And a few other things that you can easy do keep on reading all the stickies.

Check out the FAQ, Perklo has a good write up in there on the Superlight. They have a checkered reputation for being a good shooter, some hate em and others love em. A good cleaning and lapping wouldn't hurt, but there are more serious issues that need to be dealt with too. Check out Howard NZ's post down the page, "Handi Superlight .243 can shoot"...
