OY! I'm lost and buried. I can't figure out what my .308 Ultra wants in order for it to shoot. Could shims on either side of the barrel lug slot work, what can i make em from'. And im thinking a SVL Barrel Deresonator will help as well...why do i think i'll get links to the FAQ section? i found, yes found, a torque wrench so anyone may post the proper torque setting for the foreend screw.

How about slug the barrel and see what it's true size is? Given the NEF .002 tolerance in barrel specs, you might find that you should be shooting .311 bullets :eek:

Wish I'd known about the variations in nef barrels before we dumped our .308! .311 might have been the solution!

You need to tell us more about it. What is it doing? What kind of groups are you getting? What all have you done to it?

Ok....i'm not gonna give you a link to the FAQ's. Have you lapped the bore? if not.....do so. Then i would polisdh the chamber. I would then take the scope and scope rail off. Bed the scope rail as Quick does or buy the bedding compound from Brownell's. Put blue or purple loctite on the base screws, then reattach the scope. If you have weaver rings i would go with burris sig. zee rings or leupold rings. Bore sight the rifle before you take it to the range.

Then i would get all of the factory loading i could get my hands on. Try all of them and find the one it likes. I would then try the o-ring trick to see if it improves anything, if not take it back off.

If you plan on dedicating the frame and stock set to that barrel i would bed the forearm.

How was the weather when you got your best groups from the barrel? If it was cooler temps. and you were using handloads that could be the suspect. Just another thought.

If you've tryed ALL of the above maybe some of the senior members can further assist you cause that's all i know to do.

WEll see the thing with my rifle is its shown me 1" groups @100yrds i've shot em'. How ever it was then it aint like that now. I sanded the foreend ahead of the lug and loctited the rail. The bullets were Nosler BT's 165gr now i got Speer BTSP 165gr. Perhaps best to go back to Noslers? Anyway the groups opened up to 3+ inches, some hit other targets or not at all. the Scope is Nikon Pro-staff 3-9x40 with Leupold Rifleman med rings.

what was the temp. like when you shot the 1" groups? what powder are you using?

Changing bullets, regardless if their weight is the same, will change the ballistics and how well they shoot. If you had a good load to begin with, I would suggest you go back to it and see how well it works again....but it may not if it was cooler when you were getting the 1" groups.... powders shoot much differently when temps change.

I use Hodgdon Varget and then it was cooler than todays high 70s, it was comfortable, must have been June maybe. I know that changing bullets would mean a new powder charge and that's why today i had a OCW trail setup and it all royaly blew. I may go this saturday and i'll have a known charge weight with my Speer bullets to see how my rifle acts, then i'll do another OCW trial. At least my sportster .17 shoots consistanly

Also i have plans to remount the rifle with a low power variable or fixed 4x.

i tinkered with it some more (i'll tell ya if it works) and have 9 rounds to find screw tightness spot.

I actually don't use the oring and leave the srcew just tight enough to hold the forearm on. I like for the forearm to more just a tad, any slop is too loose, it should just move, also I rasp out the hole so that it fits the barrel freely.

The problem you bring up, a rifle that shots great one time out and lousy the next time out has been a complaint for a long time.

Try the Federal match ammo in it...I had real good luck with that ammo..

True...but for the groups I got in mine...and how well it did in the first postal match here...it was worth it...
